Summary/Objective
Maintains safe swimming conditions in the designated swimming area behind the Beach House. Assists in day-to-day operations of the public Beach House. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Essential Functions
- Maintains constant surveillance of the designated swimming area.
- Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
- Maintains effective, positive relationships with the public and other staff.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the designated aquatic area.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies City of Duluth Park Rules within the Park Point Rec area.
- Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
- Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Checks the designated area for hazardous conditions when arriving.
- Attends all staff meetings and training as required.
- Maintain current certifications.
- Complete additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Rec Area Safety Staff:
Safety Staff are on duty at the Beach House on days when conditions are unsafe for swimming. In addition to the essential functions of the lifeguard listed above, the job description for Safety Staff has the following additions:
- Keep the Beach House, designated swimming area, and Rec Area clean and safe for public use.
- Interact with beach users, educating them of present dangers.
- Be able to perform light cleaning tasks such as cleaning bathrooms, taking out garbage, mopping floors, etc.
- Assist beach users with the USCG Auxiliary Lifejacket Loaner station.
- Assist the Duluth Fire Department in monitoring water conditions as it relates to rip current safety and informs them of any flag changes that may need to occur.
- Complete duty checklists and reports.
- Complete other tasks as assigned by a supervisor or senior staff.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position will not have any supervisory responsibility.
Work Environment
The work environment for this position includes a building and a sand beach waterfront. Work environment will vary depending on the weather at the Park Point Beach House.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Ability to pass lifeguard water test.
- Must be able to remain alert.
- Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods in different weather conditions.
- Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
- Ability to continuously scan all areas of the designated swimming area with clear vision.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
- Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a part-time position. Hours are 12 – 5 pm or 11 am – 6 pm, depending on the day. Weekend availability is required.
Travel
Travel is not required for this position.
Required Education and Experience
- Minimum age of 18.
- Certifications: Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED with Waterfront Module (required), and Oxygen (preferred). Waterfront Module and Oxygen training can be provided upon hire.
- Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
- Successful completion of the Duluth Y’s Lifeguard Assessment prior to employment

Preferred Education and Experience
One-year post-high school experience.

- Must be able to successfully pass a background check.
