Description
The Lab Information System (LIS) Coordinator oversees the development, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of the integrated LIS to support the delivery of laboratory services and laboratory information. This position will also be responsible for working cooperatively with the other departments within the hospital.
RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS):
- Supports and assists in the development and maintenance of the LIS.
- Supports and manages organization wide systems.
- Implements and validates new laboratory instrumentation and interfaces with the LIS.
- Develops new policies and procedures regarding the use of the LIS and provides updates as needed.
- Maintains a deep working knowledge of current and future capabilities across laboratory applications.
- Collaborates with lab leadership and other department staff to ensure lab activities and support is integrated into planning for laboratory information activities and ensures minimal disruption of operations during LIS maintenance or changes.
- Maintains regulatory requirements of all aspects of the LIS across the organization.
- Assists with providing training, technical, and application assistance to users to better utilize the functions available within the LIS and performs troubleshooting activities.
- Maintains and validates new processes in the Laboratory as it relates to technology systems.
- Updates test catalog for all reference labs and testing interfaces.
- Updates test menu including new tests, change in test location, test methodology, normal values, critical values, delta changes, and reference ranges.
- Works with in-house IT staff as a liaison to help facilitate software updates, additional functionality, and other upgrades.
- Answers questions from IT On-Call team member after hours and on weekends.
- Troubleshoots hardware/software issues between analyzers and LIS.
- Maintains the activities of the laboratory to maintain compliance with the Joint Commission standards and ensures all regulatory requirements are met.
- Participates in educational programs to maintain subject matter expertise and to expand management skills.
- Performs duties of technologist as necessitated by absences or peak workload.
- Must adhere to safety protocols at all times.
- Regular attendance and punctuality for scheduled shifts.
- Participates in the On-Call rotation schedule. Must be flexible and available based on staffing requirements (ex. weekends, holidays, on call.)
- Appropriately adapts assessment, treatment, and/or care methods to accommodate the physical, cultural, age-specific, and other developmental needs of each person served.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge through continuing education opportunities including internal and external educational offerings.
- Utilization of assistive devices for lifting is mandatory.
- Per DRH policy, all required conditions of employment must be met and maintained including required vaccinations.
- This position requires respirator and fit testing. Required testing will be performed on all team members at risk for exposure to airborne infectious diseases, droplet producing procedures, or any caustic chemicals.
- Implement DRH Standards of Behavior and exhibit behaviors consistent with DRH core values.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the department Director.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Proficient medical lab scientist or medical laboratory technician requiring a broad knowledge of laboratory procedures to include current laboratory practices, techniques and terminology, as it relates to LIS, chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, blood gas, microbiology, and transfusion medicine. Familiarity with the quality control requirements of a laboratory plus the related safety issues and guidelines. Attention to detail, precision, and accuracy. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to present information and ideas clearly. Ability to remain flexible to quickly adapt to urgent situations.
Position requires the ability to comprehend needs and respond clearly and appropriately. Ability to adapt procedures, processes, tools, equipment, and techniques to accomplish the requirements of the position. Must be flexible for possible work during weekends, holidays, and on call shifts. Ability to organize and prioritize workload. Skill in handling multiple priorities in a high-volume setting. Communication skills including fluency in oral and written English. Basic computer skills including the ability to send/receive email, navigate information technology associated with the position, and use Electronic Health Record information tools.
Education and/or Experience: Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) requires a bachelor’s degree in medical technology, chemical, physical, or biological science from an accredited institution. Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) requires an associate degree from an approved program. ASCP certification by an approved MLS or MLT program required. At least 3 years of professional work experience in a medical laboratory with at least 1 year in an LIS role. Moderate knowledge of medical terminology required.
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations: Current ASCP medical lab scientist or medical lab technician licensure. For those positions requiring travel, a current valid driver’s license and automobile liability insurance must be maintained.
