Position Description
The Golf Groundskeeper/Laborer Seasonal performs duties under the direct supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent and/or Assistant Golf Course Superintendent; operates powered mowing equipment, small hand powered equipment and performs manual labor involved in golf course maintenance.
Essential Responsibilities
- Mows greens, tees, collars, approaches, fairways, rough, banks, clubhouse lawns and trims around trees, shrubs and ponds.
- Rakes sand bunkers with power rake and by hand, edges sand bunkers.
- Aerifies greens, tees, fairways and other areas as directed.
- Verticuts and spikes greens, tees and other areas as directed.
- Top-dresses greens and tees.
- Edges sprinklers and drainage grates.
- Operates sod cutter, seeders, rotary mowers, string trimmers, leaf removal equipment and other equipment as directed.
- Reports equipment problems and failures to the equipment mechanic immediately.
- Re-fuels, cleans and stores all equipment and tools following usage.
- Assists in course improvement projects.
- Prepares base for turf establishment; lays sod and seeds as required.
- Waters turf and other plant life as directed.
- Assists in irrigation and drainage installation and repairs.
- Plants trees, shrubs and assists with flower planting.
- Trims hedges, small bushes and trees; cultivates landscape beds and installs mulch.
- Complies with all safety and loss prevention policies.
- Inform supervisor of any unsafe conditions or hazardous work procedures.
- Correct any unsafe conditions, if possible, and instruct co-workers on safety procedures.
- Completes all additional duties as prescribed by management.
- Assists other Park District employees when needed.
Marginal Functions
- Performs general custodial duties.
- Washes, cleans, waxes equipment inventory.
- Paints, repairs, cleans facilities or equipment as required.
Communication & Customer Service
- Develops and maintains positive and effective working relationships with coworkers.
- Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
- Ensures that matters of importance are shared to supervisor in a timely manner.
- Solicits feedback and actively listens to subordinates, peers and patrons.
- Makes recommendations for improvements and efficiencies.
- Attends meetings and participates on teams as required.
- Represents the Dundee Township Park District in a professional manner.
Safety & Risk Management
- Maintains a working knowledge of all general and departmental-specific safety rules.
- Immediately reports all accidents and unsafe conditions to the supervisor.
- Cooperates and assists in the investigation of accidents.
- Attends all required safety program and in-service education meetings.
- Treats public complaints and concerns with the utmost attention. Is courteous in all cases.
- Pays strict attention to housekeeping of work area(s) and general facility.
- Must be able to use personal protective equipment based on job specific tasks, which may include, but is not limited to, the following: Safety goggles/glasses, earplugs, ear covers, appropriate work boots, protective gloves, helmets/hard hats, masks.
Qualifications
- Minimum 18 years of age.
- Requires knowledge of and the ability to safely operate motorized turf equipment
- Working knowledge of hand and power tools
- Physical strength and agility
- Ability to follow written and oral directions.
- Bilingual a plus.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Good physical condition, sufficient strength, and mobility required.
- Mechanical aptitude required, including the use of tools, equipment.
- Reading, writing, speaking and understanding English language.
- Possess troubleshooting skills.
- Capacity to act rationally and calmly in high stress and/or emergencies.
- Ability to pay attention to detail.
- Ability to execute the essential functions of the position without reasonable accommodation.
Hours Standards
- This is a full-season, non-exempt position.
- Works a minimum of 40-48 hours per week from April through end of November.
- Spring/Fall Work hours are between:
- 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 pm or 6:00am to 2:30 p.m.
- Summer months hours are between:
- 5:30am to 2:00 p.m.
- Weekend or holiday hours may be required as well as extended hours as needed.
- A set schedule may be available.
- Days and times may be flexible depending on candidate’s availability.
