What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Child Nutrition position at Duneland School Corporation?
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Child Nutrition Director manages all aspects of the National School Breakfast (NSB) and National School Lunch Program (NSLP) (USDA states: Directors plan, administer, implement, monitor, and evaluate all district-wide aspects of school nutrition programs for the Duneland School Corporation. This includes food production, delivery, meal plan options, accounting, and the purchase and inventory of food, supplies, and equipment. The Director will ensure conformance with food quality, nutrition, and productivity standards. The Child Nutrition Director will train, manage, and supervise the Child Nutrition staff, utilize time management techniques, and implement strategies to increase participation and to achieve high satisfaction among our students with the NSLP program. The Child Nutrition Director will also participate in the Duneland Corporation Wellness Committee.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The Director must meet the minimum United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) hiring standard guidelines for districts with a student population of 2,500 to 9,999 students. A Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics, Restaurant, Hotel, and Institutional Management with demonstrable computer, record keeping, and communication skills and 5 years of institutional food service management experience is preferred.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Manage all aspects of the Child Nutrition Department in conjunction with the DSC mission, vision, and strategic goals.
- Maintain a fiscally sound child nutrition program that is in compliance with local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and policies related to all program and fiscal aspects of the NSLP.
- Maintain appropriate nutrition and financial records for the child nutrition program in accordance with the State Board of Accounts, USDA federal guidelines, IDOE state regulations, and all rules related to school business as applicable to the Child Nutrition program operations.
- Provide daily, monthly, and annual reporting, including profit and loss statements; food, commodities, and equipment inventories; reconciled statement of student funds on account; accounts payable; accounts receivable; labor usage reports; annual budget, and any reporting requested by the district administration or board of school trustees.
- Develop new and innovative program changes and expansions based on applied food service research and best practices.
- Develop a communication plan to provide information about the Child Nutrition Department services to students, staff, and the public. Look for opportunities to enhance the image of the child nutrition program.
- Communicate effectively with district administrators, principals, and business and HR staff when there are Child Nutrition staffing changes and updates.
- Participate in professional development and other opportunities provided by professional organizations such as the Indiana School Nutrition Association and the Indiana Association of School Business Officials.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (includes equipment, hours, and physical demands)
Work Environment: Typically work in a controlled temperature environment with occasional exposure to inclement weather, depending upon assignments
Equipment: Required to maintain a working knowledge of food service equipment and office equipment such as computers, printers, telephone systems, fax machines, and copiers used within the food service operations.
Hours: The Child Nutrition Director is expected to work 8 hours per day. Summer hours will be adjusted as per the CFO. Early morning, late evening, weekend, and holiday hours will be scheduled as necessary.
Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by all Duneland School Corporation Directors. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, taste, and smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
