Position Title : Elementary Early Childhood Teacher -Exceptional Learning / Special

Education

Department : Teaching and Learning

Status : Part time, 185 days per year

Reports to : Principal & Director of Exceptional Learning / Special Education

Compensation : .5 of DSC teacher salary schedule and years of experience

Benefits : Benefit eligible

SUMMARY OF POSITION :

Provides an educational program for students in an environment favorable to learning and personal growth; establishes effective rapport with students to promote positive attitudes of self-worth; motivates students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for further participation in the total school program, in accordance with each student's ability; establishes good relationships with parents and with other staff members.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Credential - Any valid / active Indiana teaching license in all appropriate areas of special education in the State of Indiana.
  • Education - Bachelor's degree, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements.
  • Personal Qualities - Highly recommended from supervisors or other professionals who have observed the personal characteristics, scholastic attainment, and classroom performance of the teacher.
  • Basic knowledge of special education laws and regulations

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Provide direct or indirect services to assigned students according to the IEP or ISP
  • Participates in the case conference committee meeting as the student's special education teacher
  • Creates IEPs including measurable goals, benchmarks and objectives to meet the student's needs
  • Regularly monitors and manages the implementation of students' IEP or Service Plans
  • Ensures confidentiality and accessibility of the plan(s) to appropriate and approved stakeholders
  • Informs appropriate and approved teachers and related services providers of their specific responsibilities related to the plan(s) and serves as a resource to all other personnel providing services to assigned students
  • Directs instructional aides and paraprofessionals and coordinate their work for the purpose of providing an effective school program according to individual student needs
  • Provides progress reports to students' parents
  • Serve as a resource for school-based interventions for students
  • Follow the criteria established in the Duneland School Corporation Teacher Evaluation Plan
  • Provide learning experiences in accordance with the Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum designed by Duneland School Corporation
  • Instruct students in citizenship, basic communication skills and other general elements of the course of study specified in state law, administrative regulations, or set by the Duneland School Corporation
  • Plan, organize, and implement differentiated lessons to meet the diverse needs of students
  • Establish and implement clear objectives for each lesson
  • Engage students in meaningful activities to assure student mastery of content
  • Apply Depth of Knowledge strands in instructional strategies
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of student performance
  • Enter student grades in student information system
  • Communicate with building principal about special education issues and trends
  • Confer with parents and colleagues to address student academic and behavioral needs
  • Establish and implement classroom rules and procedures to provide an environment conducive to learning
  • Administer assessments as required by the state of Indiana and the corporation
  • Interact with colleagues, parents, and students in a manner that is professional and reflect the expectations of leadership within the school and corporation
  • Follow all expectations described in IDEA, Article 7, the Duneland School Corporation's Teacher Agreement and employee handbook
  • Follow all procedures and expectations established by the building principal and / or corporation leadership
  • Monitor and supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day. This includes monitoring and escorting students as they change classrooms through-out the building
  • Share in the sponsorship of school and grade level activities and participate in faculty committees
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills necessary to deal tactfully and effectively with persons at all levels in order to develop and maintain productive relationships with all publics
  • Ability to learn new skills quickly and assimilate into daily work
  • Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality both inside and outside the corporation
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to multi-task with attention to detail
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changes of the normal day and expectations
  • Proficiency in the use of technology for instruction and record keeping
  • Proficiency in the use of and the ability to learn required instructional software, ( i.e. Microsoft Office, Canvas, Skyward, Google Docs)
  • Demonstrate organizational and time management skills
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by immediate supervisors and district administrators
  • SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (includes equipment, hours, physical demands)

    Work Environment : The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.     Equipment : This position is required to maintain a working knowledge of all instructional equipment. A basic knowledge of operations for computers and software, printers, projectors, smart boards, telephone systems, fax machines and copiers is required.

    Hours : Up to 5.75 hours a day except on those days that teachers are involved in a meeting or plan session called by an administrator or team leader or teachers having a student / parent conference.

    Physical Demands : The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
