GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Director of Secondary Education is a highly competent, motivated, transformational leader who works collaboratively with District and school leaders to provide strategic direction and oversight for all Secondary School programs and serves as the Secondary School Principal. The Director oversees and evaluates the work of the Principal of Teaching & Learning and the Principal of Student Conduct & Attendance. The Director reports directly to the Executive Director of Academic Programs & Data.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instructional Leadership
- Possess deep knowledge of curricula and best instructional practices;
- Monitor the implementation of standards-based instruction;
- Use student progress data to influence instructional decisions in the classroom;
- Work collaboratively with District and school administrators, staff, and other stakeholders to:
- influence the decision making to ensure that the curriculum is rigorous, diverse, and meets the needs of all students, including students with disabilities and English Language Learners;
- ensure that District initiatives are being implemented with fidelity in classrooms throughout the school;
- influence the decision making for professional development opportunities for teachers and staff to enhance instructional practices, curriculum implementation, and student engagement;
- ensure that curriculum and instructional practices for Secondary Alternative Education is tailored to meet the diverse needs of the students in the program; and
- influence establishment of and fidelity to processes for administrators and faculty to actively collect and analyze student data to determine school effectiveness.
Human Resources Administration
- Ensure adherence to legal concepts, state, and federal regulations, and Board of Education policies;
- Ensure adherence to established, clear performance standards upon which the Annual Professional Performance Review is based, builds well-defined and consistent procedural guidelines and safeguards for all evaluation procedures, and establishes a realistic evaluation timeline that ensures quality evaluations are completed;
- Actively participate in the selection of quality, committed, and capable faculty and staff using research-based interviewing practices as established by Human Resources;
- Develop and provide the support structures for mentoring programs in which new teachers grow personally and professionally;
- Provide opportunities for new teachers to collaborate with highly effective teachers;
- Recognize faculty and staff strengths, providing specific commendations; and
- Recognize faculty and staff challenges, providing recommendations for improvements to be realized with clear descriptions of areas to be improved and the expectations for performance improvements.
Budget and Resource Management
- Develop and manage the budget for secondary education programs and initiatives, ensuring fiscal responsibility and alignment with District priorities;
- Allocate resources effectively to support instructional materials, professional development, technology, and other needs identified by schools and departments; and
- Seek external funding opportunities and grants to supplement District resources and expand educational offerings for secondary students.
Research and Innovation
- Implement research-based, adopted District initiatives;
- Remain informed of current research, trends, and best practices in secondary education, incorporating evidence-based strategies into curriculum and instructional design; and
- Participate in professional organizations, conferences, and networks to share knowledge, contribute to the field, and remain connected with educational leaders statewide and nationally.
Policy and Compliance
- Remain informed about federal, state, and local education policies, regulations, and mandates relevant to secondary education;
- Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements related to curriculum, assessment, student services, and reporting; and
- Advise District leadership on policy implications and advocates for changes that support the needs of secondary students and educators.
Organizational Management
- Submit accurate, required reports in a timely manner;
- Collaboratively organize the development of the school master schedule for faculty, staff, and students;
- Provide and reinforce clear structures, rules, and procedures for faculty, staff, and students;
- Maintain appropriate record keeping systems;
- Supervise maintenance of student enrollment, attendance, and cumulative records;
- Make creative use of all resources, including people, time, and money, to improve teaching and learning;
- Provide for the purchase, receipt, distribution, storage, care, repair, and inventory of school building supplies, materials, and equipment; and
- Order New York State Assessments.
Secondary Alternative Education
- Coordinate, monitor and evaluate the Secondary Alternative Education Program:
- Implement and continually improve secondary alternative education programming tailored to meet the diverse needs of students in grades 7-12;
- Establish policies and procedures to ensure program effectiveness and compliance with educational standards;
- Provide guidance and support to faculty and staff to assist them to overcome academic, behavioral, and social-emotional challenges;
- Collaborate with faculty to develop individualized support plans, monitor student progress, and address barriers to learning;
- Oversee the hiring and training of qualified faculty and staff who are passionate about working with at-risk and marginalized students; and
- Provide ongoing professional development opportunities to ensure that educators are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to effectively engage and support students in alternative education settings.
Other
- Attend meetings of the Board of Education, as directed by the Superintendent of Schools; and
- Perform other tasks and responsibilities, as assigned by the Executive Director of Leadership and Human Resources or the Superintendent of Schools.
Salary : $110,000 - $130,000
