Job Summary
Join Our Environmental Services Team as a Survey Technician – Contribute to Accurate Mapping and Drive Successful Projects!
Our Survey Technicians perform technical work using CAD equipment to draw County maps, perform survey-related duties including remonumentation and parcel mapping and to assist the County Surveyor in the performance of their responsibilities, and related work as apparent or assigned.
The anticipated starting wage is between $21.44/hr and $22.64/hr
Primary Responsibilities
The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position. Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully to be qualified for the position. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Assists the County Surveyor in carrying out the duties of the position as defined in Chapter 59.45 of the Wisconsin Statutes.
- Assists with establishing, protecting, perpetuating and maintaining the monuments at the corners of the US Public Land Survey system.
- Assists in reviewing certified survey maps and plats submitted for review.
- Scans, indexes, files and preserves survey records.
- Creates survey and parcel maps using CAD software.
- Provides survey information and assistance to surveyors, other County departments and agencies and the public.
- Assists in performing surveys of County lands.
- Assists in maintaining horizontal and vertical control networks.
- Provides information to the public and other staff on general ordinance administration.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Associate/Technical degree with coursework in surveying, civil engineering, GIS, natural resources, or a related field.
- Requires less than two (2) years experience in land surveying.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Valid driver’s license or the ability to travel between work locations.
- Prior to hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES QUALIFICATIONS
In order to perform the duties of the Survey Technician position (listed above) the following knowledge, skills, and abilities are essential for Survey Technician to possess.
- General knowledge of related industry, organization and department policies, practices and procedures.
- General knowledge of related industry, organization and departmental legal guides, recommendations, best practices, ordinances and laws.
- General knowledge of related Wisconsin statutes and administrative codes.
- General knowledge of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management Manual of Surveying Instructions.
- Ability to read and comprehend blueprints, plot plans, construction drawings, certified survey maps, maps of survey, plats, technical writings, instructions and educational materials relative to job objectives.
- Ability to interpret and apply statues, administrative code, county ordinances and other regulations in the review of certified survey maps and plats.
- Ability to maintain a safe working environment.
- Ability to follow written and oral instruction and to complete tasks in a timely manner.
- Ability to write concise, accurate summaries of field work in field notes.
- Ability to use standard office equipment, standard office software, GPS and AutoCAD software.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships.
- Ability to follow Dunn County policies and procedures including those pertaining to confidentiality.
- Ability to prioritize and organize job assignments.
- Ability to manage time effectively, manage multiple projects, and complete work within established deadlines.
- Ability to work the allocated hours of the position.

- Ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals.
- Ability to make coordinate geometry and trigonometry calculations.
- Ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages.
