Mechanical Engineering Consultant – E&I NA
The E&I Leveraged Engineering team is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support the North America region for Integrated Operations. This selected candidate will provide technical support to plant operations as well as for capital projects. This position provides support in developing and implementing design, upgrades, and problem solutions for piping, pressure vessels, pressure relief devices, mixing equipment, heat transfer equipment, air abatement equipment, solid handling equipment, and storage tanks. Expertise is desired in code design, regulatory compliance, non-metallics, pipe stress analysis, equipment repair, factory acceptance testing, and fitness for service. The ideal candidate will have detailed expertise in designing and commissioning of process equipment for batch, continuous, and discrete processes.
Typical areas of work will include process equipment design, fitness for service evaluations, equipment repair recommendations, application and interpretation of ASME and local Codes, as well as RAGAGEP such as API Standards, and development and updating of corporate standards. Duties will include:
- Utilizing fitness-for-service concepts to evaluate flaws and other damage mechanisms on existing pressure vessels, non-metallic vessels, and piping systems
- Assisting site inspection groups with proactive analysis of piping systems to prevent and eliminate piping failures and leaks
- Analyzing pressure vessel, heat exchanger, pressure relief device, and tank Mechanical Integrity / Quality Assurance (MIQA) operating problems
- Providing operating and maintenance support to recommend and help implement solutions for process equipment used in DuPont
- Identifying and promoting best practices (including national and international standards) for designing, operating, and maintaining pressure vessels, tanks and heat exchangers
- Performing pipe stress / flexibility analyses for plant sites and capital projects using ANSYS and CAESAR II® software (will provide training)
- Troubleshooting piping configuration issues and recommending solutions in compliance with industry codes and standards.
Other responsibilities will include:
- Collaborating with the Sourcing department to develop, maintain, and promote company-wide purchasing strategies for flexible hoses, pressure vessels, non-metallic vessels, pressure relief device, heat exchangers and tanks
- Assessing equipment supplier's engineering and manufacturing capability
- Leading and coordinating corporate-wide teams and projects
- Supporting site MIQA and maintenance personnel during equipment overhauls and unscheduled outages- i.e., emergency repair, working with other engineers and consultants, plant and business personnel, suppliers and contractors
- Representing the business’ interest and monitoring progress in Original Equipment Manufacturer's or 3rd party repair shops
- Supporting development and updating of Corporate Engineering Standards
The Mechanical Process Consultant will network with DuPont resources and cross-functional teams to achieve timely solutions to business problems. This individual will be a member of the SWAT team to response rapidly to critical business issues globally such as equipment failure leading to plant shutdowns, manufacturing limitations restricting rates, and anything that is resulting in lost revenue that needs prompt attention.
Capabilities (Knowledge Skills & Abilities) required for this Role:
- BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering field coupled with a minimum of 10 years’ experience primarily in mechanical engineering, application, plant technical or maintenance of chemical process equipment and systems.
- At least 5 years of experience involving rotating machinery, piping, vessels, and automated equipment.
- General knowledge of static process equipment typically used in chemical, and polymer processes.
- General knowledge of overpressure protection systems, such as pressure relief valves, rupture disks, buckling pins, conservation vents, emergency relief valves, flame arrestors, explosion vent panels, and high-integrity protection systems.
- Familiarity with non-metallics such as plastic piping and vessels, FRP tanks, plastic-lined piping and vessels for the design, inspection, and repair.
- Familiarity with fixed equipment RAGAGEPs for the design, inspection and repair (e.g. ASME, API, STI, ASTM).
- Experience with interpretation of regulatory requirements that apply to fixed equipment design and maintenance (e.g. OSHA, EPA, PED, State Boiler and Vessel Laws)
- Execution of quality audits for suppliers and manufacturers of fixed equipment materials
- Able to travel to manufacturing sites, equipment manufacturers, and repair shops (average 35% of time)
- Able to travel to manufacturing sites in the Asia Pacific region within 48 hours when site emergencies arise.
- Experience with Process Safety Management and Mechanical Integrity Systems
- Experience with Process Automation and Process Engineering
- Experience with CAD/CAM software – AutoCAD, Plant 3D, and SolidWorks preferred
- Demonstration of influential leadership to lead & mentor others
- Strong Interpersonal skills
- Demonstration of high self-initiative
