Pay: $60,000-$66,000/year DOE

Job Summary: The Assistant Car Shop Foreman’s primary role is to provide leadership and support towards the operation and maintenance of the D&SNG rolling stock, on behalf of the car shop and coach maintenance departments. This position works directly under the Car Shop Foreman to assist in leading and managing the day-to-day duties of the shop staff. The Assistant Car Shop Foreman will also provide oversight and leadership to the coach maintenance department and provide them with necessary guidance and support in the execution of their duties. Forward thinking, and strong project management skills are key qualities in the success of this role. This is a hands-on, working supervisory position.
The ideal candidate isa self-motivated individual with the ability to work both individually, and in a team environment. A key function of the Assistant Car Shop Foreman is the ability to provide hands-on leadership to staff during the course of their daily activities. This position also must be able to provide strong project management skills and leading the staff in maintaining a safe and organized work environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform daily inspections of passenger cars to identify required repairs.
- Work with Foreman to schedule work on railcars in order to assure adequate amount of equipment availability based on train schedule and demand.
- Provide leadership over tasks and employees to ensure projects stay on task and are completed in a timely manner.
- Provide oversight to the coach maintenance department, including sourcing and communicating with contract partners when required.
- Assure all railcar repair work and inspections are performed to industry standards and documented as required.
- Assist in sourcing and requisitioning of parts and supplies for specific projects to maintain adequate inventory.
- Assist Foreman with ongoing project management, coordination of heavy maintenance, as well as annual inspections and repairs.
- Complete required documentation of work performed.
- Assist Foreman with scheduling of staff to ensure adequate coverage.
- Communicate, coordinate and cooperate with all departments and customers.
- Participate in the upkeep of tooling, machines, and the cleanliness of the shop.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to co-workers.
- Assist the Foreman in the selection and hiring staff.
- Provide on-site leadership coverage working with other manager schedules
- Participate in creating and providing staff performance evaluations.
- Comply with D&SNGRR procedures, safety and operating rules.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Education, Skill and Work Experience Requirements:
- Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal English.
- Ability to make autonomous decisions and function independently.
- Prior experience managing a workforce in an industrial setting is preferred.
- Previous relevant carpentry, metal fabrication, railcar maintenance, or painting experience preferred.
- Previous relevant project management and leadership experience.
- Ability to use all variety of standard shop tools.
- Functional ability to use Excel, Word, Teams, Office, and other relevant programs.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Must be able to pass D&SNG pre-employment requirements and ongoing random drug and alcohol screenings.
Work Conditions:
- Work primarily in railroad and shop environments with periods of outdoor work in all weather conditions.
- Full-time position with ability to work morning, evening, and weekends as necessary.
- Extended periods of time walking and standing.
- Regular lifting in excess of 50 pounds.
- Must have physical ability/agility to climb, crawl, stoop, and bend in the performance of assigned tasks.
