Pay: $72,000 – $82,000/year DOE

Job Summary: The Roundhouse Foreman’s primary purpose is to lead the personnel and work directed towards the year-round operations, maintenance, and repair the D&SNG fleet of steam and diesel locomotives. The RH Foreman will work closely work with the D&SNG GMF on all day-to-day operational needs, staffing levels, purchases, accident/incident reviews, scheduling, and other tasks requiring immediate and regular action. Additionally, the RH Foreman will participate in scheduling repairs and maintenance on locomotives and equipment to meet operational needs. Including, but not limited to, equipment management, capital projects, budgeting, mechanical planning, mechanical procedures, safety policies, acquisitions/disposals and major facility improvements.
The RH Foreman should be able to provide leadership, supervision, support, and knowledge to a team of employees while simultaneously working to grow both the D&SNG steam, and diesel programs in a safe and productive work environment. They should also be able to provide strong project management while maintaining a safe and organized work environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assure an adequate amount of locomotive power is available based on train schedule and demand.
- Lead, coordinate and direct multi-month projects ensuring timely completion.
- Ensure that all locomotives remain in compliance with federal regulations.
- Work to consistently maintain proper paperwork and documentation.
- Assure work is performed to accepted standards and documented as required.
- Participate in developing long term equipment maintenance cycles, and upgrades.
- Assist in budgeting equipment maintenance needs.
- Assist with project management of on-site contract work.
- Assess and determine what work is required and assign adequate personnel and resources.
- Work with Purchasing Department on pricing of parts and supplies and maintain inventory.
- Mentor, train and provide performance and behavioral expectations to staff.
- Help to create and maintain a safe work environment that complies with all regulations and company policies and procedures.
- Manage department schedule, payroll and staffing hours.
- Communicate, coordinate and cooperate with all other departments.
- Training of staff – to include safety and occupation health compliance.
- Selection and hiring of staff and ongoing performance evaluations including recommendations for compensation of roundhouse staff.
- Work with HR to carry out employee disciplinary actions including terminations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Education, Skill and Work Experience Requirements:
- Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal English.
- Ability to use a variety of shop tools.
- Prior experience managing a workforce in an industrial setting is preferred.
- A working knowledge of diesel electric locomotive repair and maintenance practices.
- A working knowledge of steam locomotive repair, and maintenance practices.
- Ability to effectively understand and direct work in various trades including welding and machining.
- Must have ability to operate heavy equipment such as loader, forklift, and tractor.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain a valid MVR
- Must be able to pass D&SNG pre-employment and ongoing physical capabilities exams.
- Must pass pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and random drug tests.
- Must interact effectively with co-workers, vendors and sub-contractors.
- Must have computer skills to maintain digital records and produce documents and communications in Word and Excel at a minimum.
Work Conditions:
- Work primarily in a railroad shop environment with periods of outdoor work and extended office time.
- Ability to work all shifts as assigned.
- Full-time, minimum 40 hours per week schedule.
- Extended periods of time walking, standing.
- Occasional work in confined spaces.
- Regular lifting in excess of 50 pounds.
