General Purpose:
The Operations Manager is charged with operating the plant in manner that protects employees and the plant’s environmental obligations. Manages all activities related to plant operations (production control, maintenance, continuous improvement, operations) and development of company products. He or she, directs the activities of the plant supervisors so that they execute the plant’s safety, environmental, and productivity initiatives to satisfy the operational plan, while, protecting the plant’s equipment and assets. Identifies biggest opportunities for productivity improvements in the business. Leads efforts with his/her supervisor(s) to address those issues in a timely manner. Holds supervisors accountable to meeting/exceeding business expectations. 60% strategic/40% tactical planning. Serves as the backup to the Plant Manager.
Essential Functions:
Responsibilities that are requirements in order to perform the job:
- Maintains manufacturing operations business plans to include all program requirements, labor hours and production costs. This includes capital budget planning, review, and approval.
- Provides input to the development of product strategy and research and development of new production lines to include equipment design, modifications, and procurement
- Establishes production standards, develops budget and cost controls, and obtains data regarding types, quantities, specifications, and delivery dates of products ordered
- Provides guidance to the development of a manufacturing process plan, including personnel requirements, material needs, subcontract requirements, facility needs, and tooling/equipment needs
- Ensures all established costs, quality, and delivery commitments are met
- Coordinates manufacturing activities with all other functions of the organization and suppliers to obtain optimum production and utilization of human resources, machines, and equipment
- Oversee activities of plant maintenance functions. Take the lead in select capital projects including design and implementation.
- Provide support to EHS Manager where needed to maintain environmental, health and safety compliance requirements. Leads OSHA and NFPA compliance actions
- Participates in union contract negotiations, grievance review /settlements, job evaluations and maintain positive working relationship with Union Committee and Regional Representative
Supportive Functions:
In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of supportive functions based on business needs:
- Performs administrative activities associated with the effective management of operations, including compiling, storing, and retrieving production data for reports
- Reviews production and operating reports and directs the resolution of operational, manufacturing, and maintenance problems to ensure minimum costs and prevent operational delays, create manufacturing metrics
- Manages subordinate supervisors who supervise hourly employees
- Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public
- Ability to work all plant shift hours if needed, be available for afterhours emergencies when necessary, and adhere to all safe work practices
Education/Experience Guidelines:
- Bachelor's degree from four-year college in Chemical Engineering and a minimum of (5) five years of related Manufacturing Operations Management experience preferred
- Will consider 15-20 years of progressive experience in a chemical plant with at least 5 years of experience as a department manager with multiple direct reports such as production, maintenance, EHS, quality and logistics
- Experience as a production supervisor and production manager preferred
- Experience with polymer chemistry is desired
- Experience with OSHA PSM requirements is desired
