the I. Customer Service

a. Offer consistent, fair, and respectful customer interactions to ensure repeat customer traffic.

b. Ensure efficient, informative, and friendly service from the grocery staff according to established customer service vision and standards.

c. Ensure that all grocery staff receive proper training through orientation, ongoing training and development plans as established with the General Manager.

d. Understand and communicate the value of the co-op, and the ownership particulars to customers and staff. Work to advance the mission of Durham Co-op Market through outstanding service.

e. Provide product information and educational materials to customers and staff.

II. Ordering and Pricing

a. In coordination with the General Manager, negotiate with suppliers for favorable prices, terms, quality, and delivery.

b. Evaluate suppliers, as necessary, and investigate new sources of supply.

c. Ensure adequate supply of products keeping out-of-stocks and out-of-dates to a minimum.

d. Maintain a clear and comprehensive system for placing orders. Create and execute or oversee orders.

e. Coordinate returns and credit from suppliers.

f. Review invoices for accuracy, price changes, and product additions. Communicate with the POS Coordinator about new products, discontinued products, and price changes.

g. Establish prices to achieve margin goals set by the General Manager. Implement category management pricing to enhance sales growth and improve price image.

h. Develop promotional pricing plans and ensure appropriate stock levels, POS pricing, and retail signage for both NCG coordinated programs and in-store generated specials.

i. Coordinate with the POS Coordinator to ensure shelf tags are complete and up to date and promotional signage is timely and accurate.

j. Communicate ordering times and deadlines to other departments for cross-departmental vendors.

III. Department Operations and Safety

a. Work with the General Manager to ensure staff training for handling emergencies (shoplifters, robberies, accidents and fire.)

b. Ensure that department work areas and aisles are clean and orderly and meet all Department of Agriculture requirements.

c. Ensure that all department equipment (including ordering equipment) is maintained in good working order. Inform the General Manager of equipment acquisition, repair and/or replacement needs.

d. Ensure that grocery staff are aware of:

i. How to lift properly

ii. Proper use of the dock leveler and pallet jacks

iii. Location of accident reports

iv. Location of first aid kits

v. Procedure for transporting staff for medical treatment

vi. Dress code and customer service standards

vii. Location of safety manuals

viii. Emergency phone numbers (911)

e. Set daily priorities and sub-department performance goals to ensure productive workflow for all subordinate staff.

f. Develop and revise the department’s standard operating procedures as needed. Ensure that staff is aware of and trained in these procedures.

g. Coordinate with the Finance and General Manager quarterly inventory of grocery department stock.

IV. Personnel

a. Develop performance standards for all subordinate staff.

b. Schedule grocery and receiving staff according to weekly labor budget and quarterly cost of labor goals.

c. Arrange for coverage of vacant shifts and fill in as needed.

d. Develop training materials and systems.

e. Ensure on-the-job training for all grocery associates.

f. Hire qualified grocery staff within established policies.

g. Conduct evaluations of grocery assistant manager and associates in accordance with established policies and procedures.

h. Take corrective counseling measures and/or disciplinary action as needed for all grocery LCs and assistant manager, according to established personnel policies.

i. Ensure that department meetings are conducted regularly. Provide effective communication of operational issues.

j. Terminate department employees as necessary, following established personnel policies.

V. Merchandising

a. Work with the General Manager to ensure proper and effective merchandising of the retail sales floor.

b. Plan attractive, effective displays to promote rapid sales of promotional items. Communicate plans for sales displays to ensure timely set up, accurate signage, and coordination with POS price changes.

c. Periodically review shelf sets; execute category re-sets as needed. Determine new product slotting and shelf-space allocations.

d. Review movement and SPINs data; monitor product trends; establish periodic category reviews; add or remove products to enhance overall sales and departmental performance.

e. Cross-merchandise products with other departments in coordination with marketing department.

f. Conduct periodic price comparisons with other stores.

g. Attend regular meetings with brokers and General Manager to coordinate monthly specials.

VI. Administration

a. Attend management team meetings/trainings.

b. Work with the General Manager to establish goals for margin, labor, sales, and inventory.

c. Work with General Manager to develop annual operation budget sales projections and capital budget and equipment needs.

d. Develop weekly and annual labor budgets according to established productivity, labor, and cost goals.

VII. Other Responsibilities

a. Become familiar with and able to explain membership simply, efficiently, and completely

b. Become familiar with the products carried at Durham Co-op Market and their location throughout the store. Gather product information from training, vendors, and experienced staff

c. Work shifts as assigned, informing the General Manager of any difficulties in working assigned shifts as soon as possible

d. Arrive at work allowing enough time to clock-in at the assigned time and be on the floor ready to begin work

e. Attend and participate in mandatory staff and department meetings as scheduled

f. Use store computers for business use only

g. Keep supervisor informed of any problems or ideas

h. Treat customer service as a top priority

i. Know and follow store policies and procedures

j. Help with other tasks as deemed necessary

k. Any other duties as assigned by the Grocery Manager or the General Manager

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $23.00 per hour

Expected hours: 30 – 40 per week
