General Description
The purpose of this job is accounts payable and receivable, maintenance and control of general ledger and accounts, and report preparation for one or more complex budget codes in a large accounting office. Employee may perform a variety of accounting and reimbursement activities, including encumbering of purchases, auditing of invoices, reconciliation of line items, and inventory control. Responsibilities vary dependent upon the area assigned.
This position works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but exercises independent judgement to ensure that transactions are in accordance with correct accounting and budget procedures and statutory requirements.

Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized coursework in bookkeeping or accounting and two (2) years of experience in accounting or booking work; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

- General knowledge of the application of established bookkeeping and accounting principles and techniques to standard accounting transactions.
- General knowledge of established governmental and departmental budgeting and bookkeeping practices and procedures.

- Maintains complex general accounting books for a large size department or unit requiring the segregation of monies and expenditures into accounts involving a combination of state and federal funds; reviews project expenditures to determine that expenditures are properly charged; and prepares necessary accounting and budget reports.
- Maintains accounts involving varied and complex entries such as appropriations and allotment ledgers, budgetary control ledgers, inventory control records, requiring the application of specialized bookkeeping procedures.
- Prepares specialized financial reports requiring the review of financial records to select pertinent information and submits these reports without review to administrative officials.
- Gathers, selects, and complies accounting clerical and statistical data in terms that are meaningful to management through accounts that reflect both costs on individual funds and develops cost comparisons.
- Maintains and supervises the perpetual inventory system of books for a large agency requiring the pricing of goods purchased, manufactures, or re-sold; billing; keeping of inventory control accounts; and preparation of numerous financial and statistical reports.
- Processes accounts payable, travel reimbursements, issues bus passes and food cards, prepares monthly, quarterly, and annual reports as requested.
- Processes bank deposits of cash receipts in a timely manner.
- Gathers, assembles, tabulates, and checks general accounting and other financial data as needed for supervisors and departments.
- Performs related work as assigned.
