General Description

This position is responsible for performing advanced maintenance, repair, and fabrication tasks, including welding and soldering, to ensure the safe and efficient operation of equipment, machinery, and infrastructure. This role requires expertise in troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems while also performing structural repairs and metalwork. It also serves as a key resource for complex maintenance projects and provides guidance to junior technicians.

Duties And Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems.
  • Remove, change and install filters in air conditioners and heating units.
  • Grease bearings, clean coils, replace belts, check batteries and proper functioning of emergency lighting and check fire extinguishers for proper pressure and date tag.
  • Perform roof inspections for debris and tears.
  • Install radiators, water pumps and oil sending units on generators.
  • Clear sidewalks and parking lots, shovel snow, operate snowplow trucks and tractors.
  • Troubleshoot and repair machinery, industrial equipment, and building components.
  • Inspect and maintain facility infrastructure, including doors, floors, roofing, and structural elements.
  • Utilize hand and power tools to complete repairs and installations safely and efficiently.
  • Perform welding (Metal Inert Gas (MIG), Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG), stick, arc, oxy-fuel cutting, and brazing) to repair or fabricate metal components.
  • Conduct soldering and brazing on plumbing and electrical connections as needed.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings for welding and fabrication projects.
  • Ensure compliance with welding safety standards and procedures.
  • Inspect and test welded surfaces and structures for durability and strength.
  • Maintain and calibrate tools and equipment used for welding, soldering, and general maintenance.
  • Adhere to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and workplace safety regulations to minimize risks.
  • Utilize appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and enforce safety best practices.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory of spare parts, tools, and maintenance supplies.
  • Mentor and train junior maintenance staff on welding, soldering, and repair techniques.
  • Assist in coordinating maintenance projects, prioritizing tasks, and ensuring timely completion.
  • Collaborate with engineers, contractors, and facility managers to implement maintenance solutions.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Proficiency in welding techniques (MIG, TIG, stick, oxy-fuel, plasma cutting) and metal fabrication.
  • Ability to solder and braze for plumbing and electrical applications.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
  • Experience reading and interpreting technical drawings, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Knowledge of industrial safety protocols and OSHA standards.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (Technical school or associate degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 5 years in maintenance, including welding and soldering experience.

Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs and perform physically demanding tasks, including climbing ladders, bending, and standing for long periods.
  • Comfortable working in various conditions, including hot, cold, confined spaces, and elevated areas.
  • Ability to wear required protective gear (gloves, goggles, welding mask, respirator, etc.).

Unavoidable Hazards (work Environment)

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

  • Industrial, manufacturing, or facility maintenance setting.
  • Exposure to noise, heat, sparks, and potentially hazardous materials.

Special Certifications And Licenses (preferred)

  • Certified Welder (AWS, ASME, or equivalent)
  • OSHA 10 or 30 Certification
  • HVAC, Electrical, or Plumbing Certification (a plus)
  • Whetstone, Counseling, Testing, and Referral. Bloodborne Pathogen and Phlebotomy may be acquired during probationary period.

Standard Clauses

May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and emergencies (man-made or natural) to meet the business needs of Durham County.
