POSITION OPENINGTRAFFIC CONTROL DIVISION - TRAFFIC CONTROL SPECIALIST The Town of Durham in New Hampshire’s seacoast region is one of the most beautiful and desired locations in the State and is home to the University of New Hampshire. The Department is seeking a highly qualified team member to join an exceptional team of Public Works professionals to serve in the role of Traffic Control Division - Traffic Control Specialist.The successful candidate will undertake rewarding and challenging work involving the maintenance, construction, and operation of traffic control signals and devices, street signs, pavement markings, and street lighting systems to ensure the safety and functionality of the Town’s multi-modal transportation network. The salary range for this position is from $25.09 to $28.59/HR, depending upon qualifications.The successful candidate will have a minimum of three (3) years of experience in the trades and construction field, with a strong emphasis on working with traffic control systems. A Certified Flagger designation or an ability to obtain within three (3) months of hire is required. KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY AND SKILLS REQUIRED· Proficiency in MUTCD standards and requirements as outlined by the Federal Highway Administration.· Working knowledge of street lighting systems, facilities, and other associated appurtenances.· Superior knowledge of traffic control sign packages and standards for use in road construction and other various scenarios.· Proficiency in the layout and application of pavement markings using a line striping machine.· Skilled within the various trades; carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC.· Skilled in operating heavy machines and snow removal equipment such as front-end loaders, backhoes, skid steers, and street sweepers for variety of different purposes to accomplish different job functions.· Skilled in the operation of a 26,000 GVW truck with front/wing plow and material spreader.· Knowledge of proper disposal and handling requirements of solid waste, universal waste, hazardous waste, and recycling.· Basic knowledge of truck and heavy equipment components.· Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds.· Ability to perform a physically demanding job, at times with no assistance.· Requires exposure to outside weather, including frequent wet and/or humid conditions. CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESSafely operate a vehicle mounted ariel lift to perform traffic sign, signal, and street lighting repairs.Construct and layout traffic control packages for road construction and special events.Record and maintain an inventory of various traffic control devices; cones, barricades, variable message boards, signals, and signs and fix/replenish when needed.Complete routine and emergency work orders in a timely manner.Repair/replace damaged mailboxes after winter storm events.Safely operate a chainsaw and chipper for vegetation removal.Perform routine inspection and maintenance on vehicles and traffic control equipment such as checking fluids, safety equipment, and tires.Assist the Buildings Grounds Supervisor in the maintenance and upkeep of Town facilities and public parks/lands.Coordinate, set-up and tear-down local, state, and presidential elections in conjunction with Town, ORCSD, and state officials.Safely operate a one-ton dump, front-end loader, and 26,000 GVW truck during winter storm operations.Assist Highway, Water, and Sanitation Divisions when needed.Perform other miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
