in the Human Services & Public Safety Department. The
Coordinator/Instructor of Public Safety will manage the coordination, administration, and timely
execution of cross-functional projects with the Human Service & Public
Safety Pathway, including setting, tracking, and meeting deadlines,
coordinating course schedules, and maintaining program compliance. This
position will also develop and teach courses within the Public Safety
Continuing Education (CE) or Curriculum (CU) instructional programs as needed.
Examples of Duties
- Maintain an accurate inventory of Public Safety Training supplies, including instructional supplies, portable equipment, and course records for all programs.
- Assures the maintenance and completion of records, reports, and other information required in this field related to the American Heart Association, AHA Training Site, and the Office of the State Fire Marshall.
- Participates and facilitates the coordination, design, and implementation of Public Safety programs in Durham and Orange Counties, including CPR and Fire Services.
- Coordinates and participates in the Training Site’s initial and subsequent site reviews. Maintaining a networking relationship with Durham Tech’s AHA Training Center.
- In coordination with the Director of Public Safety Training, performs site visits and compliance checks of college processes and State-mandated course requirements.
- Coordinates with the Director of Public Safety Training to prepare a master course schedule and assists with marketing and registration of courses.
- Develop and teach (6 credit hours or 96 contact hours) courses related to fire services, emergency management, public administration, or emergency medical services in the Public Safety pathway.
- Assume other appropriate responsibilities and perform additional tasks as assigned by the Dean or Chief Academic Officer in meeting the institution's needs.
Minimum Qualifications
American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, or PALS Instructor, N.C. State Fire Marshall’s Office, or N.C. State Office of Emergency Medical Services qualified instructor certification.
Preferred Education:
Bachelor's degree in a related public service or medical field of study.
Work Experience:
Minimum of two years of field experience in a public safety-related or educational fieldSupplemental Information
- Demonstrated ability to organize, develop, and teach professional-level courses and strong organizational skills
- Awareness and sensitivity to the needs and expectations of the community college student.
- Experience and high-level proficiency with college student information systems (e.g., Colleague), Windows, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint 2010 or above), and basic query language.

Normal Working Hours:
A minimum of a 40-hour work week as determined by the supervisor to allow the employee to fulfill the assigned duties and responsibilities, including occasional evening and weekend hours. Summer schedules may vary to enable four-day or four-and-one-half-day work weeks.
