Role: Financial Controller

We are a family-owned S corporation and a leading firm in commercial real estate investment banking. Our company provides debt solutions to developers, real estate private equity firms, institutional investors, and other commercial property owners. As a service provider with a team of 10 employees, we act as an intermediary between funding sources and borrowers. We are seeking a Controller with experience in a small to mid-sized privately owned firm. This role reports directly to the Partners and is responsible for financial reporting, accounting, human resource compliance, and operations.
Responsibilities:
Financial and Accounting:
- Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements and reports.
- Maintain banking relationships to ensure quality service.
- Foster collaboration with external accountants and stay informed on tax law changes through research and communication.
- Support external auditors and accountants in the annual USAP loan servicing audit and financial statement compilation.
- Ensure timely reconciliation of all bank accounts with approval from the Partners.
- Continuously evaluate financial functions for cost-saving opportunities and efficiency improvements.
- Track firm income and expenses, reporting any discrepancies to executive management.
- Develop annual budgets, considering new initiatives, anticipated growth, and asset replacements.
- Oversee year-end tax planning and coordinate shareholder distributions.
- Request and manage W-9s for 1099 reporting, ensuring compliance with IRS requirements.
- Process payments, payroll, and employer/employee contributions to the company’s retirement plans.
Human Resources:
- Collaborate with the firm's Third-Party Administrator (TPA) and Financial Advisor to ensure retirement plans are cost-effective and diverse.
- Keep the firm informed of advantageous new retirement plan options.
- File timely 5500 forms for retirement plans and review valuation packages from the TPA.
- Conduct an annual review of the firm’s Professional Employer Organization (PEO), recommending or implementing changes if needed.
- Coordinate with the PEO on HR matters and regulatory compliance.
Operations:
- Oversee company insurance policies, including auto, property, liability, E&O, fidelity, and cyber coverage.
- Manage the annual renewal process for WBENC and New Jersey Women Certification Program designations.
- Assist in the negotiation and renewal of the company’s office lease, ensuring timely extensions.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as an accounting or finance manager.
- Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting.
- CPA certification required.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Detail-oriented mindset with excellent time management abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and accounting software.
- Team-oriented, self-motivated, and capable of leading innovation and process improvements.

Pay: $110,000.00 - $130,000.00 per year
