POSITION SUMMARY |
Facilitate communication between the deaf and hard-of-hearing students and others in the educational environment. The classroom teacher of the hearing impaired student and the lead educational interpreter assist the site administrator; or designee in the evaluation of the interpreter’s job performance. |
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS |
- Serve as the primary communication link and language model for students who are deaf and hard of hearing.
- Use both voice to sign and sign to voice skills in helping the student fully participate in the regular education program.
- Adjust the language of the instruction, when necessary, to meet the student’s comprehension of the material.
- Provide tutorial assistance as directed by the teacher to help the student with a hearing impairment, as necessary, to ensure the student’s comprehension of the material.
- Assist the teacher of the hearing impaired in educating students and staff about interpreter use and group amplification systems.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding all educational information.
- Encourages the student with a hearing impairment to be responsible in the educational environment and discourages dependencies within the student/interpreter relationship.
- Preview lessons to be sure he/she has knowledge of all signs necessary to interpret the lesson.
- Assist students in participating in extra-curricular activities, including field trips and clubs.
- Provide training for other Educational Interpreters who have lesser certification levels.
- Provide services for after-school programs such as plays, sports, and assemblies.
- Perform other duties as outlined by the building administrator.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE |
- Must possess a VQAS Level III certification.
|
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES |
- Awareness of how children acquire language and process information at different ages.
- Familiarity with IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
- Awareness of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students’ experiences, cultural identity, and accessibility needs.
- Understanding professional boundaries, ethics, and responsibilities in a school setting.
- Working effectively with teachers, special education staff, and parents to support students’ learning.
- Ability to recognize when a student is struggling, disengaged, or needs additional support.
- Reinforce student comprehension and encourage language growth in both ASL and English.
- Uphold ethical standards and protect sensitive student information.
