Founded in 2004 and named for the first African-American woman to earn her Ph.D. in Mathematics, the award-winning E.L. Haynes Public Charter School serves nearly 1,200 students in grades Pre-K 3 through 12th grade. E.L. Haynes operates two campuses in the Petworth neighborhood of Northwest Washington, DC, and offers a rigorous educational program designed to prepare students to succeed in the college of their choice.

ABOUT THE POSITION

As a member of the Core Leadership Team, the High School Principal will have a unique opportunity to lead the schools implementation and execution of key strategies to achieve outstanding results of all students aligned to the E.L. Haynes Graduate Profile. The Principal is critical to the success of the vision and mission and has the rare challenge of preparing a student body of 425 scholars that consists of students that have grown up at Haynes from grades PK 3 - 6 and new students from throughout D.C.

The High School Principal is responsible for leading their team to support students to achieve dramatic outcomes, while offering an exciting program of core academics and electives, that lead to all students being prepared for success in college. In addition to fostering a rigorous academic program, the Principal will also be responsible for maintaining extracurricular activities, including a comprehensive athletics program. The Principal will be responsible for creating a vision for the high school aligned to the mission of E.L. Haynes, ensuring the effective supervision and support of instructional staff, and engaging families in support of every student. In order to lead the remarkable high school staff they must have content expertise in order to coach teachers and guide their development.

The Principal will work closely with other members of the Core Leadership Team, including the Chief Executive Officer; Chief Academic Officer, Senior Director of Curriculum Instruction and Assessment, Senior Director of Student Support Services, Chief Talent Officer, Chief Operating Officer, the Elementary and Middle School Principals, and the High School Leadership Team to provide consistent, effective school leadership. The High School Principal will report to the Chief Academic Officer.

You will lead:

Teaching and Learning

  • Oversees and supports the effective, consistent teaching practices as described in the E.L. Haynes Teacher Observation Rubric;
  • Supports individual teachers in improving instructional practice and reaching personal goals;
  • Plans and facilitates biweekly Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) meetings;
  • Supervises the Assistant Principals, Assistant Director of Student Support Services, Dean of Culture, Instructional Coaches, Director of College Counseling, and Athletic Director;
  • Diagnoses and monitors student learning, instruction, and curriculum with data; and
  • Communicates with parents about the instructional program at Haynes;
  • Supports the implementation of a comprehensive academic and elective program.

School Culture

  • Communicates the organization and schools vision and builds teams to support the mission and values;
  • Motivates adults to demonstrate their belief that all students can learn at high levels, and to accept responsibility for students meeting their achievement goals;
  • Uses knowledge of restorative justice and effective practices to support equity and student agency;
  • Fosters student leadership, efficacy and stewardship;
  • Is accessible to students and parents; and
  • Engages families and larger community in the life of the school.

Aligned Staff

  • Develops annual strategic staffing plan in collaboration with Chief Academic Officer and Chief Talent Officer;
  • Works with the Chief Talent Officer to recruit, select, and evaluate high quality staff;
  • Plans and leads weekly professional development aligned with the schools goals;
  • Plans professional development for new staff with Core Leadership Team;
  • Facilitates the setting of campus and grade level SMARTIE goals;
  • Meets with teachers about individual professional development goals;
  • Seeks professional development opportunities for entire staff;
  • Leads a high functioning Instructional Leadership Team (ILT); and
  • Prepares weekly staff notes to provide ongoing communication with teachers and campus staff.

Systems and Operations

  • Works with the Operations Manager to manage day-to-day operations of the campus;
  • In conjunction with the Chief Academic Officer, develops a master schedule for all grade levels and content areas that aligns with the needs of all students;
  • Develops inclusion and multilingual learning schedule with Assistant Director of Student Support Services and Multilingual Learning Specialists;
  • Attends Board meetings and the Boards School Performance Committee meetings, as needed;
  • Works with other Principals and Finance team to draft annual budget; and

  • Demonstrates self awareness and commitment to ongoing learning;
  • Sets ambitious targets and maintains a relentless focus to achieve school goals; and
  • Takes personal responsibility for student achievement and success.

You have:

  • A belief that all children, from every background, must receive an excellent, college-preparatory education, and are able to reach high levels of achievement;
  • Fully embraces serving students with special needs and language acquisition needs;
  • A track record of success as Principal or Assistant Principal of a high performing school, and/or has led dramatic increases in student achievement;
  • A minimum of 5 years of teaching experience, preferable in a core content area (i.e. Math, English, Science or Social Studies);
  • Some knowledge and/or context of public education in the District of Columbia;
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, lead, and collaborate with adults from a diverse range of perspectives and backgrounds;
  • Demonstrated ability to build and keep strong relationships with diverse students and families;
  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal);
  • Exceptional analytical skills and data management;
  • Strong systems thinking and management;
  • Ability to build strong, authentic relationships and credibility with people across roles and teams;
  • Self-motivation, especially when juggling competing priorities;
  • Ability to think strategically, translate thoughts into action, and follow through with all details; and
  • Humility, a sense of humor, and flexibility in an entrepreneurial environment.
  • Masters degree required.
