SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION:
Oversee and direct maintenance of District landscaping, athletic fields, driveways and parking lots and snow removal.
SUPERVISED BY: Facilities Manager
ESSENTIAL JOB ELEMENTS:
- Manage the turn on, balancing, and winterizing of irrigation systems
- Determine appropriate fertilizers, soil amendments and chemicals and use appropriate safety equipment and procedures
- Be responsible for training of grounds employees in equipment use (ie: tractors, weed eaters, sprayers, heavy equipment and snow removal equipment.)
- Act in a leadership role when assigned additional personnel and/or to work with contractors.
- Give direction to up to twelve seasonal employees who operate grounds care equipment. Train the employees and plan their schedules, organize their efforts and monitor their results in order to ensure safety and efficiency, and quality of grounds appearance and condition.
- Interpret and assess blueprints and draw work sketches related to grounds care, irrigation, and drainage systems.
- Establish a positive working relationship with the appropriate vendors necessary for the ordering of parts, materials and supplies. Specify and recommend the purchase of equipment for grounds care and snow removal.
- Assist the Director of Facilities in determining which maintenance needs and/or requests should be completed on an outside contract basis.
- Assess new and existing landscaping for the District. Advise Director of Facilities on proper landscaping needs and requirements.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of tools and equipment (in the shop and in the District vehicle) and keep tools in proper working order.
- Plan and organize jobs for each day and complete those tasks in a timely manner.
- Perform specialized and/or general maintenance tasks as assigned and be willing to assist other members of the maintenance staff when needed.
- Immediately inform the Director of Facilities of any known situation which may be hazardous to students or staff.
- Respond to emergency calls. Determine the nature of the problem and see that the necessary repairs are completed.
- Coordinate annual bidding of snowplow contracts. Coordinate in- and out-of-house snow removal all district sites, 16 in number).
- Perform other duties assigned.
CONTACTS:
Maintenance staff, all District personnel, vendors, homeowners, government agencies, community members, students and contractors.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Colorado driver’s license ( Class A CDL preferred) Must obtain within 60 days
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Five years experience in irrigation, preferable commercial/institution
- Experience in operating heavy equipment (backhoe, skid-steer, and trencher.
- Experience towing trailers.
- Must participate in random drug screens per CDL regulations.
- Pass DOT physical exam __ every two years.
- Knowledge of fertilizers and herbicides
- Knowledge of small engines
- Management/organizational skills
