SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Health Assistant is responsible for supporting the health and well-being of students in a school setting. Under the supervision of the District Nurse, this role involves providing basic first aid, administering prescribed medications, assisting with health screenings, and promoting a healthy environment for students. The Health Assistant will work closely with school staff, parents, and students to address health-related issues and ensure students are fit to participate in school activities.
SUPERVISED BY: School Principal, School Nurse, and Director of Health Services
ESSENTIAL JOB ELEMENTS:
- Provide basic first aid and respond to medical emergencies as needed.
- Assist with the management of chronic conditions under the guidance of the District Nurse.
- Administer prescribed medications and procedures to students as ordered by the prescribing physician and delegated by the District Nurse.
- Adhere to all district policies and protocols and state laws and guidelines
- Assist in the preparation and organization of health-related materials and supplies.
- Perform vision and hearing screenings.
- Promote healthy habits and hygiene practices among students.
- Assist in organizing and delivering health education materials or programs for students and staff.
- Maintain confidential health records for students, including treatment logs and health assessments.
- Follow confidentiality guidelines in compliance with school policies, HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
- Communicate with parents or guardians regarding student health issues, concerns, and required follow-up care.
- Collaborate with teachers and staff to ensure the safety and health of students with medical needs in the classroom and during school-sponsored events.
- Assist with maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the school’s health office.
- Manage inventory of medical supplies and report shortages to the District Nurse.
- Attend training sessions and staff meetings as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology and first aid and CPR procedures preferred.
- Previous experience in healthcare, educational, or childcare setting preferred.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Recommended completion of Hepatitis B series of immunization.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with privacy regulations.
- Ability to remain calm and effective in emergency situations.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
