From helping families and individuals access programs that put food on the table, warm their homes, and find childcare to protecting those too young or too old to protect themselves, DHS is the team of people who ensure families and individuals in our community have what they need to live a stable life now and in the future.Economic Services (a division within the Department of Human Services) is responsible for administering a range of critical public assistance programs including Veterans Services, Cash, Child Care, Emergency, Energy, Food and Medical Assistance, as well as connecting customers to other vital resources and supports.Schedule : Between 30 to 40 hours per week, depending on employee's availability. We can be flexible with this position and a hybrid work arrangement is possible.Applicants are encouraged to apply by, February 19th, however, the job will be posted until filled.Job Summary : The Veterans Service Officer (VSO) supports Eagle County veterans and their eligible family members or representatives in filing benefits claims for insurance, pensions, disability compensation, health care, vocational training, burial, and other entitlements under U.S. or Colorado law. Responsibilities include obtaining supporting documentation, ensuring claims accuracy, assisting with appeals, and coordinating with the VA Regional Office, Colorado Division of Military Affairs, and other agencies.The VSO utilizes the Veterans Benefits Management System (VBMS) and Vetraspec to manage claims, ensuring accurate and timely submissions while maintaining workflow and workload reporting. The VSO also conducts outreach and engagement efforts through various channels, including senior centers, adult living facilities, resource fairs, community events, online platforms, and other venues to connect with veterans. The VSO partners with internal and external stakeholders to deliver comprehensive and effective services to veterans, while using strength-based practices and motivational interviewing as appropriate.View the full Job Description here Key Responsibilities : Assist veterans : Guide them through the VA claims process, gather necessary documents, and submit their applications.Liaison : Act as a bridge between veterans and VA offices, hospitals, and other relevant agencies.Data entry & management : Maintain accurate records of veteran claims in various systems and generate reports.Case management : Assess veteran needs, connect them with community resources, and provide support.Community outreach : Educate the public about veterans' programs and build relationships with community partners.Qualifications : High School diploma or equivalent required. Associate degree or higher preferred.Must have served and received an honorable discharge from the United States Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, auxiliary branch or an officer released from active duty with the armed forces and placed on an inactive duty status.Two years experience in one of the following areas : adult counseling, office management, human services, supervision, law enforcement, health services or other equivalent experience in direct public contact with adults is preferred.Experience in veterans programs preferredMust possess a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.Requires travel to various locations in Eagle County and Colorado.Reliable transportation is required.Must be able to obtain Veteran Service Organization Representative certification and accreditation within required timeframes; or already possess such accreditation.Failure to obtain and subsequently maintain certification and accreditation may result in separation from employment.Skills : Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills; strong computer proficiency; ability to work independently and as part of a team.This is a demanding role that requires strong advocacy skills, compassion, and a deep understanding of veterans' needs.Review the full Job Description hereCulture & Benefits Working in local government is one of the best career paths in the mountains.
