Air Brake Technician Job Description
Position Title: Air Brake Technician
Position summary:
The Air Brake Technician will inspect, test, diagnose nonconforming conditions, disassemble, repair, and reassemble of freight and tank car air brakes systems in compliance with federal, AAR, and Eagle regulations, standards, specifications, and requirements. In addition, the air brake technician is required to comply with established Eagle Railcar Services’ production efficiency goals, quality performance requirements, and safety standards (detailed in Eagle’s Safety Excellence Program).
Tasks:
- Test the car to ensure that the air brakes apply and remain applied until a release is initiated.
- Perform single car air brake tests in accordance with federal, AAR, customer, and Eagle procedures, instructions, and requirements.
- Identify, troubleshoot, repair, and adjust malfunctions related to a railcar brake system.
- Inspect and test handbrake, beams, brake hangers, hanger pins and brackets, bottom rod and brake beam supports, and renew or repair when required.
- Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and adjust nonconforming conditions related to the slack adjuster travel assembly and components.
- Inspect and clean reflective sheeting located at various points on the railcar.
- Accurately record inspection and test results.
- Monitor air supply systems to ensure the proper pressure is maintained and is free from water that can have an adverse effect on the air brake tester’s performance.
- Observe signals from other crew members so that work activities can be coordinated, safely.
- Maintain work area in a neat and orderly manner and report potential hazards.
Skills:
- Basic knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures of railcar air brakes.
- Strong ability and a disciplined approach to follow defined procedures and instructions.
- Ability to give full attention to what other people are saying, take time to understand the points being made, ask questions as appropriate, and do not interrupt at inappropriate times.
- perform tasks that require climbing and balancing on ladders and platforms.
- Able to stand for long periods of time with limited breaks.
- Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds and team lift up to 150 pounds.
- Must be able to work in extreme temperatures and elements for an extended period of time.
- Must be able to read and comprehend basic drawings and scope of work.
- Must possess basic math skills, addition, subtraction.

Experience and Education:
- High School Diploma (or GED or High School Equivalence Certificate)

Pay: $22.00 - $28.00 per hour
