Overview
Eagles Landing Christian Academy (ELCA) is a Christ-centered educational institution committed to providing a safe, nurturing, and academically excellent environment for students from PreK through 12th grade. The School Resource Officer (SRO) plays a vital role in ensuring campus safety, managing security systems, fostering positive relationships within the school community, and serving as a liaison between law enforcement and the school.
Key Responsibilities
Campus Security & Safety Operations:
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all students, staff, and visitors on campus.
- Conduct regular patrols of the school grounds, parking lots, and facilities to identify and address safety risks.
- Assist the Head of Security in enforcing school policies, traffic regulations, and security protocols.
- Coordinate security coverage for special events, including after-school activities, athletic events, fine arts events, SGA events, and other school functions.
- Perform after-school patrols of the campus to ensure safety during extended hours.
- Ensure cafeteria areas are patrolled during all lunchtimes, either personally or by designating personnel to maintain safety and order.
- Collaborate with the Head of Security to assess and implement improved safety measures.
- Assist the Head of Security with traffic control during arrival and departure times to support smooth traffic flow and pedestrian safety.
Security Systems & Emergency Preparedness:
- Monitor, maintain, and manage the school’s security camera system, ensuring footage is securely stored and accessed only for authorized purposes.
- Obtain consent from the Head of School before releasing any video footage. If the Head of School is unavailable, obtain consent from the Head of Security only after a lawful written warrant is presented.
- Assist with reviewing footage as needed for investigations or safety audits.
- Collaborate with the school administration to develop, implement, and review emergency response plans (e.g., fire drills, lockdowns, lockdown team, and evacuations).
- Train faculty and staff on safety protocols, crisis management, and de-escalation techniques.
- Serve as the initial responder to security incidents, coordinating with law enforcement and emergency personnel as needed.
- Maintain communication with local law enforcement, fire, and EMS agencies to ensure coordinated responses to incidents.
Student & Staff Support:
- Assist school administrators in handling student conflicts and behavioral incidents.
- Support school leadership in de-escalating student disputes and enforcing school discipline policies.
- Act as a trusted presence to deter misconduct and reinforce a safe learning environment.
- Work directly with the school administration and the Head of Security to address safety concerns.
- Maintain detailed and accurate reports of incidents, investigations, and security procedures.
- Provide updates and recommendations to the Head of Security and school leadership on campus security matters.
- Train faculty and staff on safety and security procedures to ensure preparedness.
Administrative & Logistical Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the part-time SRO to ensure that school deposits are securely transported to the bank as needed.
- Assist in other designated security-related errands as assigned by the Head of Security.
- Maintain an updated inventory of all weapons, ammunition, equipment, uniforms, vests, and other security-related materials in the security office.
- Ensure all security equipment is in proper working condition and report any maintenance or replacement needs.
- Coordinate with the Head of Security to manage procurement and budgeting for security-related supplies.
Faith Integration & Professional Conduct:
- Demonstrate a personal commitment to Christ and model Christian values in all interactions.
- Actively support and uphold the mission and faith-based values of ELCA.
- Provide spiritual encouragement and leadership when opportunities arise.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- Preferably a POST-certified or retired law enforcement officer in good standing. Candidates with relevant security or school safety experience may also be considered.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in law enforcement, school security, or a related field.
- Experience managing or working with security systems, including cameras and access controls.
- Familiarity with safety planning, crisis intervention, and school security best practices.
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust with students, staff, and families.
- Effective communication and conflict resolution abilities.
- Knowledge of child development and experience working with children and adolescents.
- Proficiency in operating and managing security technology systems.
Spiritual Requirements:
- Active member of a Christian church with a strong testimony of faith in Jesus Christ.
- Agreement with ELCA’s statement of faith and demonstrated commitment to integrating faith into daily responsibilities.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Ability to stand, walk, and patrol the campus for extended periods.
- Physically capable of responding quickly to emergencies or restraining individuals if required.
- Comfortable working in a dynamic environment with frequent interactions with children and adolescents.
Schedule
The School Resource Officer (SRO) position follows the school calendar. The official contract period begins at the end of July and runs through the end of May. Summers are off, providing an opportunity for additional training, professional development, or supplemental income through other employment.
This position will follow the ELCA school calendar with the following breaks:
- Fall Break – 1 week
- Thanksgiving Break – 1 week
- Christmas Break – 2 weeks
- Winter Break – 1 week
- Spring Break – 1 week
Regular school hours are 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM on weekdays. Additional hours may be required for after-school events, athletic games, or special programs, and these hours will be compensated accordingly.
