Asphalt Plant Operator

POSITION SUMMARY:
An asphalt plant operator is the person who is responsible for overseeing the daily operations within a plant that produces asphalt. This position is found in various asphalt factories and plants across the world. This position works within the plant itself, and the environment can involve physical labor in an indoor atmosphere. Formal education is not typically required within this job. However, the more experience the operator has, the better. Knowledge regarding plant operations, mechanical abilities, and various asphalt mixes is always preferred.
Job Description:
- Operates concrete, asphalt, or sand and gravel plant to batch, crush, or segregate materials used in construction: Moves controls on panelboard or control board to heat, dry, and mix ingredients, such as asphalt, sand, stone, and naphtha, to produce asphalt paving materials; to weigh and mix aggregate, cement, and water to produce concrete; or to control feeding, crushing, and sifting machinery in sand and gravel plant.
- Observes gauges, dials, and operation of machinery to ensure conformance to processing specifications.
- May repair machinery, using hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment.
- May be designated according to type of plant operated as Asphalt-Plant Operator;
Concrete-Batch-Plant Operator; Sand-And-Gravel-Plant Operator; or according to machine function as Crusher Operator.
Responsibilities involved with an asphalt plant operator can include:
- observing gauges and dials of machinery
- ensuring conformance of processing applications
- repairing machinery
- operating various tools and machinery
- using welding equipment
- weighing and mixing asphalt
- inputting numerical data into computer systems
- loading trucks with materials
- doing daily production operations
- assisting with general maintenance
- ensuring safety all team members
- reporting mechanical failures
- reporting material inconsistencies
- performing other activities required by supervisor
This is a position that will typically require a person who is physically fit, as some physical demands include lifting heavy objects, pushing and pulling heavy objects, crouching, kneeling, walking, standing, and general handling of objects. An asphalt plant operator should be punctual, pay great attention to detail, and possess expert communication and listening skills. This person should ideally maintain up-to-date knowledge regarding general operations of their plant.
