Earth Optimist Club is a nonprofit, tax-exempt 501c3 charitable organization based in New England. We offer free and affordable outdoor instruction programs to underserved youth, aiming to inspire a love for the outdoors and foster environmental stewardship in children. Our programs provide fun opportunities for interaction with the environment to incentivize caring for the planet. This afterschool programming is part of the Learn 365 initiative, in partnership with Rhode Island Department of Education, Westerly Public Schools, Southern Rhode Island Conservation District, Stem Mentorship RI, and the Mystic Aquarium.
Role Description
This is a part-time on-site role for an Afterschool Program Coordinator/Educator at Earth Optimist Club in Westerly, RI. The Assistant Program Coordinator/Educator will be responsible for assisting the management of a group of up to 20 students in Westerly, RI; leading an outdoor-focused program curriculum that includes rock climbing, hiking, and more. This is a part-time position with the potential for an expanded role in the future.
Key After-School Responsibilities:
- Supervise group of up to 14 middle school students, and 4 high school student mentors, twice weekly.
- Work with high school mentors to carry out program curriculum and lead students on fun, interactive outdoor activities such as local hikes, climbing gym outings, ski lessons, surf lessons, and more.
- Support and encourage positive social interactions.
- Cell Phone Policy: Refrain from using a cell phone while supervising children.
- Collaborate, communicate with, and follow directions from the After-school Coordinator and other colleagues.
Qualifications:
- Must possess a genuine passion for teaching and bettering the future for our youth.
- Must possess leadership qualities and recognize the impact they have on those that look up to them.
- Previous experience working with children preferred, especially in an outdoor setting.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff, students, and engage positively with families.
- CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain) is a plus, Wilderness First Responder/Outdoor Survival training is a plus.
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies, Education, Nonprofit Management, or a related field is a plus.
