BAND TEACHER - East Alexander Middle School
Full-time Position
General Statement of Job
Develop in each pupil an appreciation of the art of music; teach techniques of instrumental music expression; discover and develop talents of pupils in the field of music; develop knowledge and sills in listening to and reading music and the technique of playing all musical instruments.
Required education
- Bachelor’s degree and licensed by the state of North Carolina in the required area(s), preferred.
- Degree in education or in a related area that will qualify for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Essential duties and responsibilities
- Direct middle school instrumental performers, such as marching band, concert band, soloists and ensembles
- Plans a balanced music program and organizes daily class time so preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished with allotted time.
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and attempt to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
- Demonstrates method and procedure to pupils.
- Utilize repertoire of types of music literature appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils.
- Maintains inventory and controls the storage and use of school-owned property; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as needed.
- Accompanies and supervises students on field trips to concerts or performances or other types associated with musical performances.
- Provide for band participation at extracurricular events, including concerts, pep rallies, sports events and parades.
- May direct planning and supervision of student contests and arranging of student performances.
- Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
- Treats all students in a fair and equitable manner; interacts effectively with students, co-workers, parents, and community.
- Maintains and respects the confidentiality of student and school personnel information.
- Evaluates the academic and social growth of students and keeps appropriate records.
- Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom and promote effective participation in all activities.
- Communicates effectively with parents through a variety of means and encourages parental involvement in students’ education.
- Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings.
- Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health and learning problems.
Additional duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the principal and other central office administrators as designated by the superintendent.

- Skilled in playing musical instruments and have in-depth knowledge of techniques and skills.
- Must possess the ability to instruct students in learning.
- Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations that interrupt normal daily schedules.
- Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics of data, people, or things.
- Requires the ability to read and prepare a variety of correspondence including reports, handbooks, forms, lists, instructional materials, etc.
- Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments, or directions to subordinates or assistants. Also includes receiving instructions, assignments and/or directions from superiors.
- Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
- Requires the ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including medical, legal, and counseling terminology.
- Must be able to exert up to 25 pounds of force occasionally; and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, care, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
