East Bay Community Foundation (EBCF), one of the nation’s first community foundations, has been a driving force for racial equity and social justice since its founding in 1928. Based in Oakland, a vibrant city celebrated for its diversity and legacy of social justice, EBCF manages over $600 million in assets and provides leadership in grantmaking, impact investing, and donor services throughout Alameda and Contra Costa counties. Named the nation’s “boldest” community foundation in 2019 by Inside Philanthropy, EBCF is dedicated to fostering an inclusive, equitable, and just East Bay by supporting innovative programs and partnerships that ensure everyone has the freedom to dream, heal, and belong.

EBCF seeks a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead financial operations during a transformative growth phase. The CFO, reporting to the President and CEO, will oversee the Foundation’s financial strategy, investments, budgeting, forecasting, compliance, and grants management. They will lead a committed team of three and manage an operating budget of $10 million. They will collaborate with the COO, Board committees, and investment managers to ensure financial health and sustainability. As a key member of the Executive Leadership Team, the CFO will help shape and execute the Foundation’s strategic priorities while driving innovation in philanthropic finance.

The CFO will direct the Foundation’s financial strategy and operations to support EBCF’s mission and long-term goals. They will manage financial systems and processes, including donor-advised funds, endowments, and grantee programs, ensuring transparency, scalability, and operational efficiency. The CFO will work closely with the CEO and the Executive Leadership Team to provide financial insights and recommendations that guide strategic initiatives and innovative financial programs. Additionally, they will be a trusted advisor to the Board of Directors and its Finance, Audit, and Investment Committees, ensuring compliance, effective oversight, and risk management.

The ideal candidate is someone who truly values the chance to merge their strategic financial expertise with a genuine dedication to making a meaningful impact in the community. They have a deep passion for racial equity and social justice, blending visionary ideas with practical experience to bring teams together around shared goals. With 7 to 10 years of senior financial management experience—preferably in the nonprofit or philanthropic sectors—they’ll possess valuable expertise in fund accounting, donor-advised funds, and managing intricate financial portfolios. Advanced qualifications like an MBA or CPA highlight their solid technical and strategic financial background. Most importantly, the successful candidate will showcase a proven history of effective financial planning, modeling, and creating scalable financial systems that truly serve their mission.
