East Bay Municipal Utility District’s (EBMUD) Cross-Connection Specialists work in the office, shop, and field while coordinating site surveys, inspecting, testing, installing, and repairing backflow prevention devices and related metering and control equipment. They also perform related work as needed.
Typical responsibilities include:
• Locating, inspecting, and testing existing backflow prevention devices and water meters.
• Repairing and installing backflow assemblies and meters.
• Investigating to determine cross-connection hazards.
• Advising consumers on EBMUD cross-connection control ordinances and regulations, requiring installation of backflow prevention where necessary.
• Maintaining accurate service records.
• Observing proper safety precautions and maintaining tools, supplies, equipment, and the work site in a safe condition.
• Directing the work of lower-level employees on specific projects or maintenance procedures.
• Investigating and responding to customer complaints regarding cross-connections and backflow prevention.
• Ensuring compliance with EBMUD, state, and federal regulations for backflow prevention.
The ideal candidate will have previous cross-connection and inspection experience; familiarity with utilities and recycled water operations; excellent customer service skills; a strong background in meter maintenance and testing practices; and the ability to work independently and effectively in the field with minimal supervision.
The salary range is $8,980 per month increasing to $9,429, $9,900, and $10,395 after 12, 24, and 36 months, respectively.

3. Must possess and maintain a California approved certificate that demonstrates competency as a backflow prevention device tester.

5. Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the class.
6. Must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and work overtime as needed.
7. May be required to be clean shaven as required to wear respiratory protection equipment.

5. The probation period for this position is 12 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.
