East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) is inviting skilled welders to apply for Pipeline Welder III. As a Pipeline Welder III, you will work directly with pipeline field crews performing a variety of combination welding in installing and repairing water distribution pipelines, repairing machinery and equipment, and cutting and fabricating special metal articles. EBMUD welders are expected to perform three-position combination welding using oxyacetylene and electric arc welding equipment. The Pipeline Welder III job is a journey level position and reports directly to a line supervisor. Some typical welding assignments include: • Fitting and welding steel water distribution pipelines, offset returns, related fittings and appurtenances of various sizes, shapes, and pressure capacities. • Fabricating special pipeline fittings including but not limited to tees, crosses, elbows, flanges, reducers, and build up rings while using the most appropriate tools and equipment for the job such as large band saws and metal rollers. • Welding broken or cracked parts of machinery and equipment. • Fabricating or modifying a variety of non-standardized metal parts and subassemblies, hard surface equipment blades, and other parts. • Completing special project welds involving connections at filter or pumping plants while working to close tolerances or where pipes are under pressure. • Preparing surfaces for welding. • Removing slag from the weld line. • Building up and increasing the size of metal and metal alloy parts in preparation for machining or finishing to desired dimensions. • Maintaining and adjusting welding equipment. • Ensuring that safety precautions are followed during welding operations. • Driving and stocking a welding truck, or other motor vehicle, and operating a forklift in the performance of the work. • Preparing sketches and basic reports of work performed. • Entering data into automated or computer base work management systems. The ideal candidate will demonstrate experience and skill at laying out, setting up, fitting and welding water distribution pipelines and related fittings. The salary range is $9,436 per month increasing to $9,908, $10,403, and $10,923 after 12, 24, and 36 months, respectively. EBMUD is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Attainment of recognized journey status in oxyacetylene and electric arc welding and one year of experience in pipeline welding. 3. Possession of a valid California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record. 4. Ability to obtain a 6G certification for pipe welding from the American Welding Society (or other private company) within the probationary period. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test part in order to advance to the next step in the selection process. 3. All qualified applications and supplemental responses will be competitively evaluated, with those candidates demonstrating the strongest qualifications for the position to be invited to a performance test tentatively scheduled for early March. The test may include calculating measurements from a blueprint and types of pipe welding that would involve a miter butt joint, coupling, and a butt strap lap joint. 4. Successful candidates will be placed on the hiring list, based on rank, for further consideration to fill the current regular vacancy, as well as others occurring over the next 12 to 24 months. 5. The probation period for this position is 12 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months. 6. All employment offers are conditional, pending the results of a Live Scan background screening.
