Vacancy Situation: These are seasonal positions, paid by the hour with no benefits, typically not lasting more than six months in duration. Work schedules may be full-time or part-time depending on the needs of the park. Parks with an early need for part-time and weekend work will be making job offers as their vacancies become open. - Greets visitors;
- Opens up the kiosk for daily operation;
- Collects park fees, provides accurate change, issues receipts, and accurately maintains deposit logs and accounts for all revenue collected during the shift;
- Maintains inventories of necessary supplies;
- Responds to visitor questions and assists park users, including providing brochures, giving directions, taking reservations, and conveying park rules and regulations;
- Communicates with staff and public safety officials during emergencies;
- Conducts litter pick-up surrounding kiosk;
- Opens parking and swimming areas;
- Reports public hazards; and
- Performs related duties as assigned.
As a Student Laborer: Under supervision, performs non-skilled labor in the parks. This is a general labor position that may be called upon to do any labor task that does not require training or experience:
- Performs various unskilled manual tasks needed in parks, including collecting garbage and litter, emptying trash cans, sweeping paths and parking lots, cleaning restrooms, restocking restroom with paper supplies, emptying barbecue grills, loading and unloading pickup trucks, assisting Park Rangers in irrigation, weeding, and pruning tasks, etc.;
- Performs various unskilled general tasks related to the operation of the park buildings, including unloading supplies, emptying wastebaskets, painting and staining, graffiti removal, weed abatement, and performing general clean up such as washing vehicles;
- May operate a District vehicle or utility cart, but will not operate other machinery (electric, battery, or gas) or power equipment;
- Uses a variety of hand tools and cleaning supplies;
- Responds to visitor questions;
- Conveys park rules and regulations to park users; and
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Students: Equivalent to the completion of the tenth grade, and 16 years of age or older. Must be in attendance at, or on legitimate leave from, a high school, trade school, college, or university, and must be enrolled in at least one course for the upcoming semester.
Seniors: Senior Adults (55 )
Experience: None.
License or Certificate: May require possession of a valid California Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment in this classification.
Minimum Qualifications for Student Laborer:
Education: Equivalent to the completion of the tenth grade, and 15 ½ years to 25 years of age at the close of the recruitment. Must be in attendance at, or on legitimate leave from, a high school, trade school, college, or university, and must be enrolled in at least one course for the upcoming semester.
Experience: None.
License or Certificate: Positions may require the possession of a valid California Driver's license as a condition of initial and continued employment in this classification.
Conditions of Employment:
- Positions are required to wear a District uniform;
- Positions must pass a cash handling test (Gate Attendant only);
- May be required to work unusual hours, weekends, and holidays;
- May be required to work alone for extended periods of time between visitors and/or in inclement weather.
- Candidates for either position must be available to work on Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day to be considered for most park locations.
- This position is designated as a Mandated Reporter under the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA). Mandated reporters are individuals who are obligated by law to report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect. As such, you will be required to sign an acknowledgment of having received the District’s policy and your responsibilities.
Knowledge of:
- Park rules and regulations;
- Cash handling procedures;
- Park amenities including trails;
- Basic math skills;
- How to operate automated cash drawer and other electronic equipment including phone and communications radio;
- Excellent customer service principles;
- Verbal communication skills and competent mathematical skills.

Student Laborer:
Knowledge of:
- Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
- Perform manual labor;
- Follow directions;
- Use basic hand tools;
- Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications;
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work at all levels, including a culturally diverse public, with a focus on quality service to internal staff and external customers.

Selection Process: Application materials for all applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be reviewed by a screening panel to select the best qualified for testing and/or interview. Candidates whose qualifications best match District needs will be invited to participate in the examination process, consisting of a 15-minute online math/cash-handling test (Gate Attendants only). Human Resources will establish a hiring list as a result of this exam and candidates on the list are eligible for referral to the hiring supervisors for interviews and possible selection. Possession of minimum qualifications does not guarantee an invitation to test and/or interview.
