What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cytotechnologist position at East Carolina Pathology?
We are seeking a dedicated Cytotechnologist responsible for the timely and accurate screening and reporting of cytology specimens. This role also emphasizes professional growth and development through continued education.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Perform primary screening of Gynecological and Non-gynecological samples, providing interpretations and comments in line with established reporting procedures.
- Conduct Quality Control screenings as required.
- Maintain accurate daily records of slides screened and hours worked at Ariana Diagnostics and any external employers.
- Foster open communication with the department supervisor, pathologists, and co-workers to optimize departmental operations.
- Provide technical consultation and assistance to cytology processing technicians.
- Stay current with advancements in the field through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations.
- Ensure compliance with accreditation and regulatory agency requirements.
- Uphold corporate policies, quality assurance, safety, and infection control protocols.
- Perform routine maintenance on microscopes, including general cleaning and troubleshooting.
Other Duties/Responsibilities:
- Additional tasks as assigned.

- No supervisory responsibilities.
Job Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Proficient in evaluating Gyn and Non-Gyn cellular material using established morphologic criteria.
- Strong commitment to maintaining confidentiality of client/patient information.
Education/Experience:
- Two years of college with at least 12 semester hours in science (8 in biology) and one year of cytology technical training from a CAHEA accredited school, OR
- Bachelor of Science with one year of cytology technical training from a CAHEA accredited school.
- Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Board of Registry is required.
- Recent graduates from CAHEA accredited Cytotechnology programs may be considered; certification eligibility is a must.
- Preferred completion of ASCP registry prior to employment; candidates must retake the exam within the designated timeframe if not passed.
- Quality Control rescreen eligibility after three years of full-time experience or with Medical Director approval.
- Current active State of Tennessee license as a Cytology Technologist is required.
Work Environment:
- Laboratory setting with extensive interaction with pathologists, management, and peers.
- Responsible for handling hazardous materials while adhering to all safety protocols.
Physical Activities:
- Requires full range of motion, manual dexterity, and hand-eye coordination.
- Involves extended periods of sitting while using a microscope, with moderate walking and standing.
