The Academic Advisor will provide guidance to first- and second-year students intending to major in one of the traditional degree programs within THCAS, collaborating closely with the Academic Advising and Resource Center (AARC) team to support student achievement.

About 60% of the position is focused on providing effective academic advising to students pursuing the BSUS as well as first- and second-year students intending to major in one of the traditional degree programs within THCAS. This includes assisting students with making appropriate course selections, identifying their interest and talents, choosing careers and appropriate majors, understanding university academic policies and procedures, and becoming engaged in the life of the university. 30% of the position will focus on teaching UNIV 2000 and/or COAD 1000 and 10% on recruitment and retention events such as Open House, new student orientations, graduation, and college and university student recruitment events.

Academic Advising
  • Guide Students in Major and Career Exploration: Assist students in identifying academic majors and career paths that align with their skills, interests, and goals, providing personalized guidance throughout their decision-making process.
  • Support Course Selection and Academic Planning: Help students develop and refine their course schedules to meet degree requirements, maintain academic progress, and align with their long-term goals.
  • Facilitate Understanding of Academic Requirements: Educate students on general education, program requirements, and any prerequisites necessary for their academic and professional success.
  • Maintain Accurate and Up-to-Date Records: Keep organized, detailed, and current advising records to track students’ progress and ensure compliance with institutional policies.
  • Monitor and Foster Academic Performance: Help students identify potential challenges and collaborate on strategies to improve performance and maintain progress toward graduation.
  • Connect Students with University Resources: Act as a liaison to refer students to appropriate campus units, learning resources, and support services such as tutoring, counseling, career services, or financial aid.
  • Engage in Regular Meetings with Advisees: Build strong, supportive relationships through consistent one-on-one meetings to provide academic and personal guidance tailored to each student’s needs.
  • Encourage Campus and Community Engagement: Promote student involvement in social, volunteer, and civic activities, as well as participation in major-related student organizations, to enhance their collegiate experience and build a sense of community.
  • Educate Students About University Policies: Ensure advisees are aware of important university policies, deadlines, and procedures, including graduation requirements, academic standing, and course registration processes.
  • Advocate for Students’ Needs: Serve as a supportive advocate, helping students navigate challenges related to academic performance, personal circumstances, or institutional barriers.
  • Collaborate with Faculty and Staff: Work closely with faculty members and other university staff to stay informed about academic program updates and ensure students receive consistent and accurate guidance.
  • Promote Lifelong Learning and Skill Development: Encourage students to view their academic journey as part of a broader framework of personal and professional growth, emphasizing transferable skills and continuous learning.
  • Utilize Technology to Support Advising: Leverage advising software and tools to maintain records, communicate effectively with students, and track academic milestones.


Teaching
Teach at least one section of the BSUS gateway course, UNIV 2000, during the fall, spring, and summer semesters, totaling a minimum of three sections per academic year. Provide instruction for COAD 1000 or other courses as needed, with prior approval from supervisor.
  • Develop and update course syllabi and instructional materials to align with program goals and student needs.
  • Implement engaging and inclusive instructional methods, such as active learning strategies, discussion-based activities, or technology-enhanced learning.
  • Offer regular office hours for student consultations and academic support.
  • Participate in curriculum design and revisions to ensure courses remain relevant and aligned with industry trends and/or academic standards.
  • Utilize ECU’s learning management system (LMS) effectively to share resources, grade assignments, and communicate with students.
  • Maintain organized and current records
  • Provide students with timely and ample feedback on work submitted

Recruitment and Retention
  • Engage in Recruitment Efforts: Actively participate in events such as Open House, new student orientations, and college or university recruitment fairs to promote programs and attract prospective students.
  • Represent the University and Program: Serve as a knowledgeable and enthusiastic representative of the University Studies Program and the College of Arts and Sciences at recruitment events, highlighting the benefits and unique opportunities available to students.
  • Facilitate Connections with Prospective Students: Build rapport with potential students and their families by answering questions, sharing success stories, and providing information on academic programs, student support services, and campus resources.
  • Support New Student Onboarding: Assist with the transition of new students into the university by participating in orientation sessions and offering guidance on course selection, degree planning, and student resources.
  • Contribute to Retention Strategies: Collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators to implement initiatives that enhance student satisfaction, engagement, and academic success, fostering retention.

Minimum Education/Experience
A Master’s degree is required. Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Two or more years of experience in counseling, advising, and/or teaching is preferred. Also, prefer that the Master’s degree be in a liberal arts or sciences discipline. Strong advising, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills. Computer skills and should enjoy working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
