Truancy Officer- East Greenwich School Department

The East Greenwich School Department seeks applicants for a Truancy Officer. This position will report to the Assistant Superintendent and Director of Student Services.

The primary duty of the Truancy Officer is to enforce the Rhode Island State Statute, specifically Chapter 16-19-1 of the Public Laws, in regard to the compulsory attendance of students who have not attained the age of 18. The Truancy Officer investigates cases of unexcused or excessive absences, and the reasons behind the absences, to determine if it is allowed under compulsory attendance laws. The Truancy Officer will represent the District if any cases are referred to the R.I. Family Court System.

Schedule: Approximately 30 hours per week

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Maintain a working knowledge of regulations regarding attendance, state law, district policy, and administrative regulations

Works with district staff, parents, school attorney and community police officers as it pertains to attendance and truancy.

Serve as a liaison between the School District, families, and the R.I. Family Court system.

Visits the home or suspected places of truant children as necessary.

Initiates petitions to juvenile intake and prepares cases for formal hearings in a timely fashion.

Monitor and verify on a semi-annual basis, any/all McKinney-Vento students.

Objective/Goal:

To assure that no student enrolled in the district gains less than full advantage from his/her educational opportunities as a result of attendance problems.

To minimize the interruptions and disturbances in the education of each student caused by poor and/or irregular attendance.

To endeavor to procure the full-time attendance at school of all children of the district who are required by law to attend school.

To ensure that students attending East Greenwich Public Schools meet the residency requirements according to state law and school committee policy.

Desired Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s Degree in Emergency Management, Homeland Security, Criminal Justice, or related field. (Master's Degree preferred)

A minimum of 5 years of experience working in the K-12 school safety and security or public safety fields such as law enforcement.

Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to interact with students, parents, school personnel, and agency representatives.

Basic CPR and First Aid skills.

Ability to multitask and manage several locations.

Ability to function in high stress environments on occasion.

Understanding and working knowledge of safety and security equipment such as CCTV, Alarms, Access Control, and Emergency Management Applications.

Understanding of Federal and State Laws relating to K-12 Schools and Education.

Ability to interact with students, parents, school personnel and agency representatives.

Competency in written and oral expression.

Familiarity with the court system.
