Town of East Hampton - Environmental Analyst in the Planning Department - $73,330.19 annually for a 40-hour work week
The Planning Department assists with the implementation of the codes, programs and policies related to long-range plans including land use, zoning, major infrastructure projects, climate adaptation and sustainability, and provides the Town Board and Planning Board with analysis, support, and recommendations.
Additionally, the Planning Department notifies the public of land development applications, reviews and decisions regarding, and demonstrates excellent service, technical knowledge and professionalism when assisting project applicants, constituents, and members of the public.
The Environmental Analyst serves as an advisory specialist to the Planning Department and Boards on the environmental impacts of decisions and considerations. These determinations are based on scientific research and analysis on matters affecting the quality of the environment and are used to develop a program of environmental protection.
Responsibilities and duties:
- Prepares written reviews of the environmental impact of projects that come before the Town Planning and Zoning Board for permits
- Coordinates environmental reviews with other involved government agencies
- Makes recommendations to the Planning Board and Zoning Board when required
- Works with the Town Attorney and Planning staff to draft local legislation related to environmental studies
- Participates in planning studies for municipal properties and comprehensive planning
- Provides information to the public and applicants regarding town environmental regulations
- Conducts field work to identify regulated environmental features and systems for protection
- Coordinates with New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), Suffolk County Department of Health Services and other state and county agencies on permit applications
- Meets with applicants and their agents to review specific applications
- Prepares assessments for the Community Preservation Fund committee regarding the environmental impacts of properties and recommendations for acquisition
- Organizes and prepares spreadsheets for tracking applications
- Conducts research regarding the history, development, and environmental conditions of properties
- Presents environmental recommendations to the Zoning Board of Appeals
- Prepares and drafts administrative Natural Resources special permits
- Provides scientific information to and advises the Zoning Board on Natural Resources Special Permit applications (tidal/freshwater wetlands, coastal construction) of increasing complexity
- Ex officio representative of the Planning Department to Town Committees
- Participates in Peconic Estuary Partnership Technical Advisory Committee meetings and activities
- This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, and the annual rate of pay is $73,330.19 with benefits, including paid vacation, enrollment in the New York State and Local Retirement System and health care and dental and vision coverage.

The minimum qualifications are graduation from a college with federally authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a bachelor's degree in mathematics, one of the natural or physical sciences, environmental studies, or a related field, plus two (2) years of experience in environmental protection activities. NOTE: Graduate education in one of the above areas will be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: At the time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
