What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinarian position at East Hill Veterinary Clinic?
Mendocino County, Northern California.
East Hill Veterinary Clinic is seeking an associate veterinarian.
Associate salary is $130,000 plus $6000 stipend for medical and dental, 4% matched 401-k, CE allowance tailored to meet your needs, veterinary discount for your pets, (our cost 10%) and one month PTO, no non-compete or anything similar to a non-compete. Buy-in is absolutely on the table. Mentoring is gentle and collaborative.
We are the private owners of a long-established busy small animal practice in a beautiful 4800 square foot building in the heart of Mendocino County, Northern California. We bought this little gem of a practice 15 years ago and moved to Mendocino County from the Bay Area where I had become disillusioned with the way corporate practices treat their staff. I wanted to do things differently.
The veterinarian who sold to us in 2010 was so burned out from working 24/7/365 for 30 years that he just wanted to escape. We took on those responsibilities at first, thinking that we needed to provide the same level of care to our community as our predecessor did, and I spent the first half of a decade killing myself working 12-15 hour days, being on call nights and weekends. We quickly outgrew the existing facility, so we built a new one twice the size. And we got busier and busier. And then something changed. NOMV happened. My priorities shifted and I realized that if I wanted to continue to live, I needed to reevaluate how I was living and practicing. Seven years ago we stopped seeing after hours emergencies, we are closed every weekend, we observe (are closed and paid) for all federal holidays plus some holidays we just made up to ensure that there is a long weekend for everyone at least once a month.
We are dedicated to our wonderful staff and clientele, we practice high quality medicine and surgery in a beautiful, comfortable setting with a fantastic, skilled, professional and highly irreverent staff, many of whom have been with us for a decade and a half.
We are currently a 2.5 DVM practice; sadly will soon be losing an associate of nearly five years as she will be moving out of the area. DVMs currently work a four day week and are closed on the weekends with no on-call.
In addition to taking care of our clientele and their pets, East Hill Veterinary Clinic provides medical, surgical and dental services for cats and dogs for our local no-kill shelter, Humane Society for Inland Mendocino County. We dedicate one surgery day per week for private patients and a second surgery day for shelter patients, so we are able to enjoy the best of worlds: general practice and shelter medicine.
We have all the usual bells and whistles: digital radiology, digital dental radiology, endoscopes (rigid, flexible; we can get into any orifice!), all the monitoring equipment (Dopplers, pulse oximeters, ECG, etc. We have a full diagnostic lab with digital cytology, diagnostic ultrasound with live assistance, TonoVet, a full service grooming salon. We have four treatment tables in a spacious open floor plan treatment room. We do a ton of dentistry and our techs are masters at extractions. We have two surgical suites, we use Hot Doggers, IV fluid warmers.
We have a practice manager, two RVTs, three veterinary assistants, three receptionists and one person dedicated entirely to cleaning. Most of the staff are cross trained to cover each other to allow lunches and time off. We use Cornerstone and are paper-light.
We have four exam rooms, all with phones and PCs. Receptionists room our clients, techs go in first and then and doctors talk to client take patient to treatment for services where we have treatment tables and thick chef’s matts and low rolling stools to facilitate exams. So no crawling around on the floor wrestling big dogs at the feet of clients.
We have a full pharmacy and utilize an online pharmacy as well. We are fans of sedation for dogs and cats who just can’t deal.
We have a zero tolerance policy for bad client behavior: if clients are rude to our staff, we fire them. No drama, just filtered clientele who treat us with respect.
Our rural small town is bustling with artists and ranch folks, a delightful mix of wineries, redwoods, hundreds of miles of hiking trails, the world famous Skunk Train, lots of small town charm, and we are just an hour away from the most breathtaking coast in the west, three hours north of the Bay Area and an hour from Santa Rosa which has all the things like Trader Joes. Ukiah, 20 minutes to the south has all features of a larger city, a variety of eateries and boutique shopping.
We have 30 minute appointments.
We are open weekdays only, no weekends, no after hours emergency. DVMs have a four day work week; but we are flexible and open to working out a different schedule if needed. We currently have one surgery day per week for scheduled elective client surgery and one day per week for shelter surgery.
Bottom line, my most important goal is to have a cohesive team which communicates, gets along and has fun.
Associate will have their own office which they can have painted and personalized as they choose.
I am not an owner who pressures associates to produce or implement sales tactics to increase revenue. I believe that if you do the right thing for your patients and your clients, the money will follow, and that has been true for my entire tenure here. I make time to mentor newer graduates and ensure that the clinic is a safe and comfortable environment to learn and practice and grow.
