Key Roles

This position is responsible for performing skilled mechanical maintenance duties in the inspection, repair, installation, and alteration of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems and related equipment and facilities. This position performs preventive maintenance and routine servicing of equipment.

Key Responsibilities

• Inspects, repairs, modifies, and installs HVAC equipment including refrigeration and air conditioning compressors, receivers, condensers, chillers, water cooling towers, forced air converter units, pumps, automatic and hand valves, expansion valves and capillary tubes.
• Conducts regular preventive maintenance inspections of refrigeration units, isolated heating and ventilating units, including boilers, gas and electrically operated air conditioning equipment, and makes necessary adjustments or repairs; services and repairs evaporative coolers.
• Repairs or replaces defective parts in units, equipment, and their controls, including thermostats, automatic switches, fan controls, log switches, damper motors, louvers, relays, filters, controls, belts, compressors, heat exchangers, high limit controls, pressure controls, safety valves, and automatic gas valves.
• Operates various hand and power tools, welder torch, vacuum pump, and test equipment; maintains equipment in effective and safe working condition; maintains parts and tool inventory.
• Repairs and rebuilds semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors and compressors for centrifugal refrigeration machines.
• Performs electrical maintenance work in the repair, installation, and alteration of HVAC equipment, components, timers, motors and wiring systems as needed; connects motors to control panels.
• Tests and examines boiler operations, observing meter and pressure gauges; conducts boiler water quality test and treatment; adjusts boiler burner combustion.
• Lubricates and packs heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and air-conditioning motors, pumps, fans, and other equipment.
• Installs and calibrates systems; installs copper tubing and repairs pipes/tubing as necessary; tests joints and insulates pipes of refrigeration and air conditioning systems; flushes boilers, descales tubing; rebuilds pressure and temperature safety valves and water pumps.
• Installs, rebuilds, replaces, or repairs fans, motors, thermostats, fuses, filters, bearings, valves, controls, gaskets and other equipment as necessary.
• Maintains records of materials and tasks performed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Key Requirements

Education and Certifications / Licenses:

• High school diploma or GED certificate.
• Must have and maintain active Kentucky state-issued HVAC journeyman or masters HVAC license.

Experience:

• Two (2) years of documentable HVAC journeyman level operation, maintenance, and repair experience in the HVAC and refrigeration trade.
• Commercial experience preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

• Thorough knowledge of HVAC practices and refrigeration systems.
• Thorough knowledge of materials, methods, and tools used in the operation and repair of HVAC and refrigeration systems.
• Strong working knowledge of industry applicable OSHA and other safety standards and best practices.
• Thorough knowledge of building codes, ordinances, and regulations for state and local authorities related to HVAC, refrigeration, and boilers.
• Proficient electrical and mechanical abilities.
• Ability to read and understand schematic drawings, diagrams, and instruction manuals.
• Knowledge of proper storage methods for equipment and supplies.
• Ability to safely operate various hand and power tools.
• Ability to troubleshoot, recommend solutions, and implement repairs.
• Provides quality customer services and maintains a positive attitude.
• Ability to prioritize work, manage time, and adhere to deadlines.
• Provides thorough and timely communication to leadership and peers.

Working Conditions

• Work may include both indoor and outdoor environments.
• Work outside normal schedule may be necessary.
• Requires bending, squatting, crawling, climbing ladders, and reaching.
• Requires the ability to occasionally lift, carry, push or pull weight up to seventy (70) pounds.
• Requires activities involving being around moving machinery, exposure to marked changes in temperature and humidity, and exposure to dust, fumes and gases.
• Must maintain valid driver’s license.
• Must wear personal protective equipment as applicable.
