The Medicine and Emergency Care Division has an exciting opportunity to recruit an Assistant Director of Nursing on the senior team.

This is a senior divisional post however the post holder's portfolio will focus on the emergency pathway.

Main duties of the job

The Assistant Director of Nursing has a unique role in supporting the direct delivery of clinical care, in line with national / statutory targets. This will be through patient and staff engagement, clinical supervision and holding self and others to account for the delivery of care in any healthcare setting they are responsible for. They will have line management and budgetary responsibility for the nursing workforce as defined by the Divisional Director of Nursing and will be an integral member of the directorate / divisional management and senior nursing team. They will provide expert nursing advice to the DDN and all other stakeholders both within and external to the division. The role of Assistant Director of Nursing carries a high degree of professional autonomy professionally accountable to the patients we serve and the nurses s / he leads.

We are looking for someone that is committed to delivering an outstanding standard of patient care and staff experience, whilst delivering on the key performance indicators. Excellent communication and negotiation skills and the ability to work as part of a team in a face paced and pressured environment are essential. A flexible approach and the ability to respond to the demands of a rapidly changing environment are also essential.

The MEC division is a large, acute division which delivers care for adults who present with medical conditions, within a variety of specialities or those undergoing clinical procedures. MEC has a range of units, wards and assessment units, managing patients across a wide range of conditions within the local demographic . The successful candidate will have responsibility for overseeing the deliver of quality care across a range of specialties, predominantly across the emergency pathway. The division promotes a multidisciplinary approach to providing care and looking for a motivated and driven nurse committed to improving the standards of the quality of care for the people we serve.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Supporting & Representing the Divisional Director of Nursing, the post holder will have operational and strategic responsibility for ensuring the delivery of clinical quality standards, patient safety and the overall patient experience in the Division. The post holder will provide professional leadership, advice and support within the division to ensure there is consistency of practice, high standards of care with a strong patient safety focus. In addition to leading and managing specific divisional activities, the post holder will also support Divisional Director Nurse Activities. They will work with a vision of delivering safe, personal and effective care.

The post holder will be accountable for non-medical care within the division & directorates with a focus on driving forward patient safety. They will be accountable for the efficient and effective operational management guaranteeing provision of high quality evidence based nursing outcomes. They will be a strong clinical leader, easily identifiable, highly visible and accessible to patients, carers and staff. He / she will have a particular responsibility to support the developments of clinical governance, and service improvement, to modernise patient services and ensure the active involvement of patients and carers in the way services are developed, delivered and evaluated.

Essential criteria

  • Registered nurse - part 1 register
  • At Least 5 years post registration - or is able demonstrate knowledge and experience
  • Masters or evidence of working towards

  • At least 3 years band 8a experience within a senior nursing role leading a team - or is able demonstrate knowledge and experience
  • Demonstration of quality improvement
