$22 - $24.29 per hour or for internal candidates pursuant to AFSCME contract

General Summary
In accordance with the established policies and procedures of the East Lansing Public School District, the Employee Benefits Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and administering all employee benefits including, but not limited to, medical, dental, vision, life, short-term and long-term disability, FMLA, ACA reporting, worker’s compensation and unemployment for the school district. The coordinator plays an instrumental role in the coordination of data between the Human Resources and Business offices.
About the Role
- Plans, organizes, processes, and directs the activities related to fringe benefits (health, life, FMLA, ACA reporting, worker’s compensation, Long Term Disability, Short Term Disability, COBRA, dental and vision).
- Manages the fringe benefits open enrollment process and assists employee as needed.
- Facilitates trainings in the understanding and utilization of employee benefits information.
- Processes benefits for newly hired employees and changes for existing employees.
- Assists payroll with deduction/contribution reports as needed.
- Coordinates workflow and procedures between Employee Benefits, Human Resources and Payroll.
- Acts as the liaison with fringe benefit vendors, schools and departments.
- Develops and maintains a system of procedures to administer the employee fringe benefits program.
- Prepares and develops communication and educational materials regarding the benefits package for all the insured employees.
- Maintains knowledge of employee contracts and Collective Bargaining Agreements relative to leaves and fringe benefits and criteria used to determine eligibility.
- Coordinates processing of all fringe benefit billings with the business office.
- Processes all employee leave requests, FMLA, medical leave, short- and long-term disability, and worker’s compensation in accordance with employee agreements and other compliance guidelines.
- Monitors and processes unemployment claims and corresponds with unemployment agency to resolve questions and concerns.
- Records bi-weekly attendance for the district.
- Acts as receptionist to central office.
- Adds new user accounts within Red Rover, sub system, for new hires and provides new hires Red Rover access information.
- Runs Red Rover reports as needed to enter attendance.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Payroll Manager, Director of Finance, and Chief Human Resources Officer.
Education, Knowledge and Skills Required
- Associates Degree in Business, Human Resources or related field of study and a minimum of 2 years of related benefits, payroll or human resources experience. Experience in a school setting, preferred.
- Ability to operate a personal computer and related software including: Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, eFinance and other district software.
- Must be able to manage multiple assignments simultaneously, meet deadlines efficiently, and produce work that is accurate, thorough, and detail-oriented.
- Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements, Board of Education policies, and applicable guidelines.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form and complete assignments on tight deadlines.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, employees, business representatives, and the general public.
- Basic math skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and percentages.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to work in an economically, culturally and racially diverse environment.
- Demonstrated good attendance and punctuality.
