Position Overview:
A Northview Public Schools elementary music teacher is responsible for delivering a comprehensive music education program to students in developmental kindergarten through fourth grade. The primary goal is to foster a love for music, develop musical skills, and provide students with opportunities for creative expression. The teacher should possess a deep understanding of music theory, proficiency in playing musical instruments, and the ability to effectively engage and inspire young learners.
Qualifications:
- Education and Certification: Possess a bachelor's or master's degree in music education, music, or a related field. Possess teacher certification in elementary music education, as required by the Michigan Department of Education.
- Music proficiency: Demonstrate a strong knowledge of music theory, notation, and history. Proficiency in playing one or more musical instruments is essential, and expertise in voice training is beneficial. Ability to read sheet music and teach students to read and interpret musical scores.
- Teaching experience: Prior experience working as an elementary music teacher or related roles is highly desirable. Experience in planning and delivering engaging music lessons, conducting rehearsals, and organizing performances.
- Communication and interpersonal skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with students, parents, colleagues, and administrators. Ability to foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment and build strong relationships with students and parents.

Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and deliver music lessons: Develop lesson plans that align with curriculum guidelines and educational standards. Create engaging and age-appropriate activities to teach fundamental music concepts, including rhythm, melody, harmony, tempo, dynamics, and music appreciation.
- Teach music theory and skills: Instruct students in music theory, notation, sight-reading, and vocal or instrumental techniques. Provide opportunities for students to develop their singing and playing abilities, including through group performances and individual practice.
- Introduce various musical genres and styles: Expose students to a range of musical genres, such as classical, jazz, folk, and popular music. Teach them about different composers, instruments, and cultural influences. Encourage exploration and appreciation of diverse musical traditions.
- Conduct rehearsals and performances: Organize and lead school choir, band, or orchestra rehearsals. Coordinate performances, such as concerts, recitals, and assemblies, to showcase students' musical achievements. Guide students in stage presence, ensemble skills, and musical interpretation.
- Foster creativity and expression: Encourage students to express themselves creatively through music. Provide opportunities for improvisation, composition, and collaborative music-making. Support students in developing their own musical ideas and compositions.
- Assess and evaluate student progress: Regularly assess students' musical abilities and progress. Provide constructive feedback and guidance to help students improve. Maintain accurate records of students' achievements and communicate progress to students, parents, and school administrators.
- Collaborate with colleagues and parents: Work collaboratively with other teachers, administrators, and support staff to integrate music education with other subjects and activities. Collaborate with parents or guardians to support students' musical development and encourage their participation in extracurricular music programs.
