Director of Nursing - Long Term Skilled Unit

Job Summary :

The Director of Nursing assumes authority, responsibility, and accountability for the delivery of nursing services in the facility. In collaboration with facility Administration, allocates department resources in an efficient and economic manner to enable each resident to attain or maintain the highest practical, physical, mental and psychosocial well-being. Collaborates with other departments, medical professionals, consultants, and organizations, including government agencies and advocacy groups, to develop, support and coordinate resident care, related administrative functions, and to represent the interests of the facility.

Responsibilities :

• Develop, maintain, and implement nursing policies and procedures that conform to current standards of nursing practice, facility philosophy, and operation policies while maintaining compliance with state and federal laws and regulations
• Communicate and interprets policies and procedures to nursing staff and monitors staff practices and implementation
• Exercise overall supervision of resident assessments and care plans
• Ensure delivery of compassionate, quality care and nursing supervision as evidenced by adequate services and staff coverage on unit, absence of odors, general cleanliness, prevention of pressure wounds, and apparent maintenance of optimal resident functions
• Collaborate with physicians, consultants, community agencies and institutions to improve the quality of services and to resolve identified problems
• Participate in admission decisions by referral review
• Participate in daily / weekly management team meetings to discuss resident status, census changes, personnel or resident complaints / concerns
• Evaluate, or have designee evaluate, the work performance of all nursing personnel, and implements discipline according to policy
• Review 24-hour report from unit on a daily basis to ensure timely, effective responses to significant changes in condition, transfers, discharges, use of restraints, unexplained injuries, falls, behavioral episodes, and medication errors.
• Monitor facility incidents and complaints to identify those defined as unusual occurrences by CMS regulations and promptly report such occurrences to Administrator for appropriate action
• Oversee QAPI and direct performance improvement teams
• Coordinate nursing services with ancillary departments
• Oversee nursing schedules to assure they meet resident needs and regulatory and budgetary standards
• Oversee and supervise development and delivery of in-service education and verify competence
• Develop positive employee relations, incentives and recognition programs and promote teamwork, mutual respect, and effective communication among employees
• Collaborate with Infection Prevention and Control nurse to establish and implement an infection control program to identify trends and to develop effective actions to control and prevent infection
• Collaborate with Administrator to prepare staff for inspection surveys, prepare and submit Plan of Correction response and implement any follow up QA required
• Demonstrate thorough knowledge of the organization's mission, vision and values
• Avoid and prevent injury to self and patients by applying principles of body mechanics
• Report all unusual incidents to the appropriate person and understand and abide by all departmental and hospital policy and procedures
• Attend scheduled and mandatory in-services
• Knowledge and adherence to ODH / CMS standards
• Comply with Code of Ethics and HIPAA requirements
• Knowledge of the hospital safety program and emergency codes and emergency preparedness procedures
• Maintain the department in a neat, clean and orderly manner eliminating any seen or known hazards
• Knowledge and compliance with standard and transmission-based precautions
