Children’s Program Specialist – Part-Time - East Pennsboro Branch Library
Job description
East Pennsboro Branch Library is seeking an enthusiastic and creative Children’s Program Specialist to engage young audiences with captivating stories, songs, and activities that foster a love for reading and learning. The ideal candidate will possess a passion for children's literature, strong communication skills, and an ability to create an interactive and enjoyable experience for children and their caregivers. The Children’s Program Specialist will present preschool Story Times and other programs for children; visit preschools, schools, daycares, and organizations; participate in community events; and handle our Summer Reading performers and attendees on program days.
Schedule: 12 to 15 hours per week (daytime), including Saturdays 1 to 2 times per month. Specific hours will be determined by the programming schedule that best meets the library’s needs. This is not a remote position. This is a year-round position.
Classification: Part Time/Non-Exempt
Pay Rate: $16.50/hour
Essential Duties and Functions:
- Plan, present, and evaluate programs, keeping the goals of the library and the community’s interests as the focus.
- Organize and present interactive Story Time sessions for children, incorporating storytelling techniques, songs, rhymes, and simple activities that engage young audiences.
- Use age-appropriate books, stories, and activities that promote early literacy skills, creativity, and social development.
- Create an inviting atmosphere for children and their caregivers, encouraging participation and fostering a positive library experience.
- Lead programs tailored to different age groups, including infants, toddlers, preschool-aged children, and school-aged children, ensuring the content is appropriate and engaging for each audience.
- Introduce children and caregivers to the library’s resources, including books, programs, and services, and encourage library card registration.
- Coordinate promotional materials with the supervisor.
- Other projects and responsibilities may be added at the supervisor’s discretion.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to develop and present programs
- Knowledge of children’s literature
- Ability to work well with children and their caregivers
- Ability to be self-motivated, proactive, work independently and make decisions based on good business practices and library philosophy
- Knowledge of local resources to develop programming connections
- Facility with technology and common computer operating systems/software
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills
Requirements:
- Experience working with children required, preferably in a library, educational, or childcare setting
- Minimum of one year’s experience in marketing or related fields required
- College degree preferred
- Previous nonprofit experience preferred
Physical and Environmental Conditions
Work regularly demands light physical effort in the handling of materials, boxes, carts or equipment, as well as manual dexterity and visual acuity when working with a computer. Regularly lifts and carries books and materials weighing as much as 30 pounds; regularly pushes and pulls carts; regularly bends and reaches for books on top and bottom shelves; regularly uses repetitive movements and views small print when assisting patrons with searches on the computer. Work may require standing for extended periods of time.
Employment Clearances
Must have FBI criminal history, Pennsylvania Child Abuse and Pennsylvania State Police Criminal History clearance that qualify the individual for employment as outlined in the library system’s Employee Clearances policy.
