The Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining all township property, equipment, trucks, roads, pedestrian bridges, culverts, stormwater facilities, park and recreation facilities and a yard waste recycling yard.

The Public Works Laborer is an hourly position within the Public Works Department. It is a semi-skilled position requiring experience in operation, maintenance and repair of equipment. The position also includes manual labor duties in the general maintenance of all township facilities and property. Various types of light and heavy motorized equipment are used in road construction, road maintenance, snow removal and other generalized work. Work will sometimes be conducted in extreme weather conditions. The position reports to the Road Foreman.

Duties:

· Assist in general maintenance for all township facilities and properties, including township building, grounds, and parks.

· Assist in routine maintenance on all township roads, roadside drainage swales, culverts and pipes.

· Operate township equipment, including: loader, dump truck, salt truck, snow plows, tractors, lawn equipment and other machinery.

· Perform routine maintenance tasks (e.g. change oil, check fluids, tires, battery).

· Wash and grease equipment and parts.

· Assist in winter maintenance on township roads, including snow removal and ice control.

· Clear snow by hand-shoveling where necessary.

· Perform manual work on assigned projects.

· Load and unload materials and tools from trucks.

· Perform routine grounds and maintenance tasks at municipal building, parks and recreational areas. Cut brush, prune trees, weed trimmer, mow grass and weed. Plant trees, shrubbery and grass. Remove refuge and trash.

· Perform basic carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, and masonry tasks to improve township facilities. May install or repair plumbing systems, drainage systems, pumps, playground equipment or shelters. May use portable hand and power tools such as drills, saws, sanders, hammers, wrenches, chisels, squares, welder, paint sprayer, etc.

· Perform general maintenance and cleaning tasks in garage. Store tools in proper location. Keep work area clean and orderly. Keep designated records.

· Perform various park maintenance duties, such as painting, repairing playground equipment, cleaning restrooms, etc.

· Available to be on-call 24/7 during weather-related events.

· This position will be part of the on-call team.

Qualifications:

· Experience in public works, road maintenance and/or other maintenance related to this type of work.

· Knowledge of or the ability to learn light, medium and heavy equipment operating procedures.

· Knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, electrical and mechanical.

· Experience in the operation of various pieces of equipment, the repair and maintenance of motorized equipment, or any equivalent combination of experience and training.

· Knowledge of proper operating practices and safety practices associated with trucks, tools, and other equipment.

· Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions related to public works operations.

· Sufficient physical strength and freedom from disabilities to permit carrying out the duties of the position, which may require lifting of heavy objects and/or working under adverse weather conditions for extended periods of time.

· Ability to walk, crouch, climb ladders and exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 25 to 50 pounds frequently.

· Ability to cooperate with co-workers on group tasks.

· Ability to demonstrate polite and courteous manner toward the general public.

· Ability to maintain a neat appearance.

· Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

· High School Diploma or equivalent

· Possession of valid PA Driver’s License
