GENERAL SUMMARY
Under limited supervision, plans and presents innovative, developmentally appropriate opportunities for students to learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to the development of students' academic abilities. This is a 190-day position. Reports to the Head of School and/or designee.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS –
- Collaborates with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods to develop a program of continuous progress consistent with East Point Academy goals and objectives to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of pupils
- Plans a program of study that meets the needs, interests and abilities of students. May teach multiple disciplines as assigned.
- Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
- Plans and prepares lesson plans and related activities for individual students or assigned classes.
- Guides the learning process toward achievement of curriculum goals; establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, etc., and communicates these objectives to students.
- Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of students involved.
- Grades work completed by students; maintains accurate records of test scores / grades. Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
- Reports suspected learning and other disabilities as appropriate.
- Maintains accurate, complete and up-to-date records as required by law, school and district policy and administrative regulation.
- Assists the school administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct; develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
- Monitors the activities/behavior of the student body as scheduled to ensure student safety and well-being.
- Assists individual students in need of special attention.
- Supervises the work of teaching assistants and/or volunteers.
- Maintains inventory of classroom supplies and equipment; prepares supply requisitions as needed.
- Coordinates and/or participates in special programs, projects or events as required; serves as adviser to student organizations, staffs and committees as appropriate.
- May provide remedial assistance to individuals, small groups or entire classes of students as scheduled during or after regular school hours.
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students and to properly care for all property, equipment, materials, and facilities
- Provides for his/her own professional growth through an on-going program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher learning
- Participates in school staff development programs as assigned by the Head of School
- Attends staff meetings, serves on staff committees as requested, and accepts a share of responsibility for co-curricular or other activities as assigned by the Head of School
- Works with classroom teachers and other support staff for proper placement instruction, (within a three-tiered intervention model.)
- Implements student tutoring component of academic program through one-to-one and/or small group tutoring, or other approaches as directed.
- Attends and contributes to training provided by the school to master specific skills needed for program success.
- Supports all program components necessary for differentiation of student needs.
- Maintains accurate student RtI records for program and compliance audits, compiles reports & oversees progress monitoring and universal screening.
- Works to facilitate accomplishment of the success of the total school Response to Instruction and Intervention (RtI) program.
- Carries out supervision/monitoring of students in a prompt and responsible manner to ensure a safe, nurturing, and healthful environment.
- Maintains, submits, and meets deadlines of required paperwork, including data entry.
- Attends and contributes to regularly scheduled professional development meetings to share and discuss ideas, strategies, and materials related to RtI.
- Supervises daily work and responsibilities of the RtI Assistant(s).

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Education and experience as required by state certification authorities. Must possess a valid S.C. Teaching Certificate in the area of Special Education (Multicategorical preferred).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Knowledge
- Knowledge of the methods, policies, procedures and activities of East Point Academy which pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position
- Knowledge of the standards, regulations, and laws relating to educational activities
- Knowledge of the records, forms and reports which must be prepared and maintained
- Knowledge of the materials and information which must be prepared for classroom instructional activities
- Knowledge in the methods for developing lesson plans and materials, and classroom activities which stimulate learning
Skills/Effort
- Ability to provide instruction to students through explanation, demonstration and/or supervised practice
- Ability to supervise students and maintain order in various classroom and instructional activities and situations
- Ability to operate general office equipment in the performance of daily activities
- Ability to prepare lesson plans, tests, and instructional materials for classroom activities
- Ability to identify student adjustment and/or academic problems, provide counseling and/or recommend appropriate remedial action to parents
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and their parents, school staff, and all other groups involved in the activities of the job
Working Conditions
- Conducts duties in a school environment with some exposure to environmental conditions
- Requires ability to work under a degree of stress related to duties that require constant attention and working with students
- Physical demands include walking or standing and lifting/moving of items related to the job on a recurring basis
- Occasional local travel is required; overnight travel is not required
- Job requires the operation of standard office equipment
Responsibility
- Responsible for the supervision of students in the classroom during the school day
- Responsible for classroom materials and supplies
- Supervises instructional assistants, substitutes and volunteers as assigned
- Responsible for completing assigned work within the deadlines in accordance with directives, policy, standards and prescribed procedures
- Responsible for attending and remaining at work regularly and adheres to policies and procedures regarding attendance, absenteeism and tardiness, providing adequate notice to administration with respect to vacation time and leave requests

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the school’s policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
