CLASS DESCRIPTION
The School Social Worker is directly responsible to the Director of Pupil Personnel and/or the Assistant Director Pupil Personnel Services and works in liaison with the building principals. The social worker is expected to provide a full range of social work services. He/she will devote his/her efforts toward improving the educational experience of those students with emotional, behavioral and learning disabilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conducts evaluations to assess intelligence, and educational development of students.
Prepares interpretive reports from social work assessment in a style that is lucid to other concerned professionals.
Confers directly with administrators, teachers, parents and students regarding his/her findings, and offers appropriate recommendations to benefit a student referred for a social work evaluation.
Provides individual and/or group counseling to students in his/her assigned buildings.
Assists/consults teachers in the development of more effective behavioral management programs in the classroom.
Participate actively in case evaluation team conferences and offers constructive suggestions for assisting referred students.
Contacts and cooperates with personnel of medical and community agencies in seeking services for the welfare of referred students.
Conducts periodic re-evaluation of students as needed and/or as requested.
Maintains a confidential file of case records on all students who have been evaluated.
Serves as a resource person concerning learning handicaps for teachers and other school personnel.
Participate and/or assists in in-service training programs for school personnel.
Attends schedule staff meetings and committee meetings as needed.
Keeps abreast of new developments in the field.
Prepares and submits required reports concerning his/her program of services to the Director of Pupil Personnel.
Interprets the school social worker services to teachers and parents.
Maintains a daily log of activities.
Assists in developing and writing individualized educational programs (IEP) for those students evaluated.
Performs other related tasks as may be assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Master’s Degree in School Social Work from a regionally accredited institution
5 year’s experience preferred.
Completion of a RI approved program or an Out of State program for the preparation of Social Worker Support Professional that leads to a master’s degree in social work.
Demonstration of meeting the Content Competencies as prescribed by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW)
Must have a Masters in Social Work, Licensed as a Certified Social Worker by RI Board of Registration for Social Workers.
Must possess a high degree of tact, diplomacy and confidentiality.
Must be detailed oriented with good organizational skills.
Must be proficient with computers.

RECIPROCITY REQUIREMENTS:
Reciprocity is recognition of preparation or certification in another state as comparable to Rhode Island. Applicants seeking certification through reciprocity must demonstrate that they meet all Rhode Island certification assessment requirements, hold the additional required certificate and meet all experience requirements when applicable. Applicants can attain certification by completing a state approved program for Educator Certification in a state other than Rhode Island within the last 5 years OR by demonstrating that they hold a currently valid full certificate in another state. Applicants must be licensed as a certified Social Worker by the Rhode Island Board of Registration for Social Workers.
