CLASS DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the Facilities and/or Assistant Facilities Director, install, inspect, and repair water, sewer, and other plumbing system, to insulate piping systems, and to do related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives general and specific work assignments from considerable latitude for the use of independent judgment in the application of practices and techniques of the trade, work is reviewed usually upon completion for satisfactory performance.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
As required, supervises the work of helpers or others assigned to assist in the performance of a work assignment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Install, inspect, and repair water and sewer systems, including lavatory facilities, faucets, drinking fountains, sprinkler systems, and cafeteria equipment.
Inspect and maintain institutional equipment, such as continuous baths, shampoo tables, arm and foot baths, thermostatic mixing valves, and various hydrotherapy equipment.
Install, inspect, and repair gas and air lines.
Keep all power equipment and hand tools of the trade in good working condition.
As required, to keep materials and time records.
Do related work as required.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND CAPACITITES
A thorough knowledge of the practices, techniques, tools, equipment, and materials used in the plumbing trade and skill in the application of such practices and techniques.
Skill in the use of the tools and equipment used in the plumbing trade.
A working knowledge of safety measures and precautions.
The ability to work from plans and specifications and the follow rough sketches and oral and written instructions, and related capacities and abilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Minimum of seven (7) to ten (10) years as a journeyman plumber.
Advanced knowledge of tools, equipment and materials used in the plumbing field.
Must have a valid Driver’s License.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Must possess a Master Plumber’s license in the State of Rhode Island and must maintain such licensure as a condition of employment.
At the time of appointment must be physically qualified to perform assigned duties as evidence by a physician’s certificate.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to work in a variety of physical positions, including sitting, bending, stretching, and walking. The employee is frequently required to use hands, handle or feel. The employee must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to, lifting and/or moving light/heavy objects. Must be able to safely use manual tools and power equipment common in the construction trades. Must be able to handle hazardous materials safely and tolerate exposure to electrical hazards.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to noise levels normally found in a maintenance facility environment.
