EAST PROVIDENCE SCHOOL DEPARTMENTSchool NurseJob DescriptionClass Title: School NurseDepartment: SchoolClassification: School Nurse/Teacher 183 Days Immediate Supervisor: District Nurse CoordinatorCLASS DESCRIPTION: The school nurse teacher promotes an optimal level of wellness for students and staff. He/she addresses the mandated health instructional outcomes. He/she maintains the standards for school buildings.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1.Assist the school physicians in his/her health examinations and carry out his/her instructions concerning the same. Report abnormalities to parent or guardian.2.Observe and question any student returning to school after being absent for a contagious disease.

The Rhode Island Health Department of Health guidelines for exclusions will be adhered to.3.May go on home visits of students when deemed necessary.4.Make referrals to appropriate source for identified defects or abnormalities.5.Provide first aid for children in need of emergency care while in school.6.Attend IEP meetings and involved in 504 preparing/enforcing when necessary and feasible.7.Responsible for screening of students, documentation of results on the health card. Report abnormalities with follow-up to parents/guardians.8.Utilize technology to maintain records.9.Administration of daily and PRN medications as prescribed by a physician with parents consent.10.Prepares and submits a monthly report to District Nurse Coordinator, who will compile statistics and forward to Superintendent of Schools.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Working knowledge of district and school rules, state and federal regulations, and policies applicable to area of assignment.Ability to work effectively with district personnel, administrators, and staff.Keen ability to use data.Ability to continuously elevate professional contributions through ongoing reflection, building upon previous learning, and being open and receptive to ongoing feedback.Ability to communicate and understand information and ideas effectively verbally and in writing.Ability to learn and proficiently use various school-related systems and databases.Ability to multi-task and prioritize work to meet time sensitive deadlines.Ability to handle difficult in-person situations and telephone inquiries which require courtesy, tact, and professionalism.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and ExperienceA graduate of an approved school of nursing Registered Nurse, Rhode Island License Nurse/Teacher Certification, Rhode Island Department of Education Bachelors Degree in Nursing, Health Education, or related field preferred.PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to, lifting, and/or moving light objects up to ten (10) lbs., and occasionally lift items slightly over ten (10) lbs. The use of a step stool may be required to reach the top drawer of a filing cabinet as necessary.
