Summary
East Side House (ESH), founded in 1891, is a 501(c) (3) organization that has served the South Bronx since 1963. The organization is dedicated to the community and focused on providing resources and opportunities. East Side House has identified that education is the foundation for economic improvement. Our youth education and technology programs teach skills to allow students and clients to become more self-sufficient and independent. As a community resource, the organization also provides services to families and a growing senior population. In 2020 the organization began food distribution as an additional way to provide economic support to the community we serve.
Urban Scholars Community School is committed to providing an education of excellence that meets the needs of a diverse community of learners. The school's vision is to ensure that all students are actively engaged in the learning process to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to be viable citizens of their community and society. The program has four main components: attendance improvement services, supportive school environment, strengthening family and community ties (with an emphasis on parent engagement), and mental health supports for students and their families needing additional support. This collaborative focus will help ensure that every child is consistently ready for the next grade level and set of challenges.
Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Teacher/Tutor is expected to perform each essential duty of this position in a satisfactory manner. The Teacher is responsible for implementing and monitoring the educational progress of each student. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or ability required, but not limited to:
Primary Functions
Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Organize and provide support or leadership for students where the primary program emphasis is to encourage learning by teaching specific skills or knowledge, providing constructive use of time, developing skills, enhancing social development.
- Provide academic support to students in area of deficit.
- Work collaboratively with group leaders in implementing lesson plans.
- Recommend, develop, and facilitate activities that provide students an opportunity for growth.
- Maintain an awareness of needs of individual students; consulting with the Program Director, or other designated staff for guidance and/or referral.
- Provide routine care and supervision to students in classroom setting.
- Participate in parent meetings and staff meetings, all team planning meetings, agency workshops and in-service training.
- Perform administrative record keeping, i.e.; attendance, emergency telephone numbers and other functions as assigned.
- Submit weekly narrative reports to director.
- Ability to adapt and creatively respond to the specific characteristics of the after-school program.

Qualifications
Required Skills/Experience
- New York State Board of Education Certification.
- Minimum Bachelor’s Degree required
- Minimum one (1) year of teaching experience required
- Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented environment.
- Experience teaching in elementary or secondary education.
- Excellent organizational and follow-up skills.
- COVID Vaccine – As a recipient of Federal, State, and local funds, all staff are expected to be fully vaccinated or able to obtain vaccination before their start date

Expected Work Schedule
This role is a seasonal part-time position (6 hours) expected to generally work September – June
Fall schedule – No remote work. Subject to change as public health conditions evolve.

Supervisory Responsibility
This role does not supervise employees but will supervise Interns assigned to the program.
Work Environment
Business casual. This job operates in a school office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Travel
Minimal expected for this position.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here represent those that an employee must meet to successfully perform this job's essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This role is generally a sedentary role; however, some sorting/filing is required. Requirements include the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
