Job Description
Summary/Objective
The Learning-to-Work program will be implemented at Young Adult Borough Centers where students are taking regular academic classes in the evening or are enrolled in evening GED classes and at transfer schools where students are attending daytime classes.
The Employability Skills Development and Career Exploration component of the Learning-to-Work program will consist of ongoing seminars and in-depth workshops. These activities will include the following:
- An intensive orientation, assessment and skills development activities to qualify students to participate in a subsidized internship
- In depth workplace skills development for students in a subsidized internship and those who have obtained jobs on their own or with assistance
- Career exploration and development of individual career plans using the NY State Department of Labor CareerZone on-line program and other materials
- Exploration of post secondary education and training options, including assistance with admissions and financial aid applications
- Other activities and topics to meet New York State Career Development and Occupational Studies Learning Standards.
The Supported Internship Experience will provide students with an opportunity to build work place skills and enhance career exploration through work-based learning. All student participants must participate in training prior to and during placement to maximize the student’s capacity to use the internship as a learning experience and to see it as a step in a career ladder leading to further education, training, and employment. To the degree possible and appropriate, placement sites should align to the students’ postsecondary interests and aspirations. The program will provide subsidized internships at sites in the public, private and non-profit sectors.
Job Development will be undertaken to assist students who successfully complete the internship experiences and any student who has successfully completed the academic program in which he/she is enrolled. Job placement will take place on-going through the year including summer.
Programmatic and Student Support Services include services such as student recruitment, intake, attendance support, information and referral, individual and group counseling, enrichment and engagement activities, college and career exploration and postsecondary planning. The intake process should gather information from students on their goals, needs, interests and personal histories and records. Additionally, providers will be responsible for working with students and their families to address issues that hinder academic, personal and career development and provide appropriate referrals.
