The ETSU HIV Center of Excellence is accepting applications for a Retention Specialist to join our multi-disciplinary Clinical Team. We have recently expanded our clinical and support services to reach a broader geographic range of patients in the Tri-Cities area with the opening of a new clinical site in Kingsport. This position will serve patients at both our Johnson City and Kingsport locations and play a crucial role in providing care to both HIV-infected and HIV at-risk patient populations.

Responsibilities include providing comprehensive support to HIV-infected and HIV at-risk patient populations by offering medical, social, and practical assistance. This includes establishing relationships with multi-disciplinary team members and community resources to assess and improve the patient’s support systems and minimize barriers to care. This position is responsible for linking patients to care, identifying and assisting patients at risk of falling out of care, providing education, skills training and support on HIV and adherence, scheduling appointments, making reminder calls, following up on missed appointments, coordinating food and transportation assistance, and maintaining patient records and databases.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the range of social services available to HIV/AIDS patients
  • Knowledge of medical diagnostic coding and scheduling practices.
  • Knowledge of computer programs and databases
  • Ability to establish constructive relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to organize and maintain patient records.
  • Ability to work independently.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma/GED
  • Two (2) years experience in scheduling medical procedures and appointments.
  • General HIV disease knowledge; must complete 8 hours of CEUs pertaining to HIV/ AIDS annually.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with HIV/ AIDS in a medical office/ healthcare facility.
